Keynote Speakers

We are proud to announce our keynote speakers for the 106th Annual AATSP Conference.

Keynote Presenters: Stephen Krashen, Professor Emeritus, University of Southern California, and Jesús Fernández González, Counselor for Education, Embassy of Spain in the United States and Canada. Picture includes portraits of both presenters.

Keynote Title: The Three (Amazing) Benefits of Self-Selected Pleasure Reading

Presenter: Stephen Krashen, Professor Emeritus, University of Southern California

More writing does not result in better reading or in higher levels of literacy. Better writing style comes from reading, not writing. This presentation will discuss three benefits of reading, as follows: BENEFIT ONE: LITERACY: Self-selected reading for pleasure is the major source of our competence in literacy (e.g. vocabulary, spelling, writing style, grammar). BENEFIT TWO: KNOWLEDGE: Those who do more self-selected pleasure reading know more, and they know more about many different topics. BENEFIT THREE: Deeper understanding of others (empathy).

Keynote Title: Mi Profe Ideal de Español

Presenter: Jesús Fernández González, Counselor for Education, Embassy of Spain in the United States and Canada

El objetivo de esta charla es hacer un retrato robot que defina a un profesor ideal de español. Esas características incluirán entre otras el conocimiento detallado de la lengua que enseñan y de la lengua de sus alumnos; las destrezas metodológicas, psicopedagógicas y de gestión del aula que allanen el camino del aprendizaje de sus alumnos; y un cierto tipo de personalidad que incluya la ilusión, la empatía, la exigencia, el cariño, el liderazgo, la resiliencia, etc.

Keynote Panel

Keynote Panel Title: Career-Connected Learning in the K-12 World Language Classroom

Moderator: Mary Risner, AATSP President, Center for Latin American Studies, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL

Panelists: Danielle Chaussée, Global Scholars Program, Oconomowoc, WI; Sam Finneseth, World Language Curriculum and Seal of Biliteracy Coordinator and ELL Network Support Specialist for Iowa, Des Moines Public Schools DMPS); Jamie Patterson, World Languages Coordinator, Fulton County Schools, Atlanta, GA.

This panel focuses on the ways we can all promote the integration of career exploration and authentic connections to real-world use of language for the 21st century workplace. This type of curriculum is commonly known as “Languages for Specific Purposes” (LSP) and tends to be more present in university programs. This discussion panel format features voices of educators integrating LSP at the K-12 level through career pathways.  Attendees from all teaching levels can benefit as we share models that can serve as a catalyst for more collaboration and articulation between K-12 and higher education language learning.
