What Our Members Say
I met my scholarly collaborator Thomas M. Stephens at the 2015 AATSP Conference in Denver. I get to see my friends from Graduate School as well as those from when I taught high school. It is a conference where people are
positive and supportive. And, you can get outside of your discipline's bubble.
John T. Maddox
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (Birmingham, AL)
I became a member of the AATSP as an undergraduate in 1973. I attended my first conference in Chicago in 1992 and have missed only once since. I have very happy recollections of many conferences; however, my first was the
most memorable: I met colleagues who have remained my friends to this day. So, my favorite part about the conference is the wonderful people that you meet and the relationships that you build with them.
Thomas M. Stephens
Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ)
I have been fortunate to attend several invigorating domestic and international AATSP conferences, but my most memorable so far was in Panama City, Panama in 2014 because of the amazing cultural experiences it afforded
me and my family. The AATSP organized walking tours in the Casco Viejo and Gehry-designed Biomuseo showcasing Panama's rainforest. To participate in these tours together with other enthusiastic Spanish and Portuguese
teachers was special. I am now able to enrich my Spanish lessons with these first-hand experiences!
Erica Nathan-Gamauf
Loyola Academy (Chicago, IL)
I look forward to the AATSP Conference every summer as a way to reenergize for the upcoming school year! There are myriad of engaging sessions for teachers of every school level, outstanding speakers that inspire, amazing
opportunities to network with like-minded colleagues, and well-deserved recognitions of those that have and continue to shape language learning in the 21st Century! I've connected with teachers from across the country,
and even reconnected with my former graduate professor, Thomas M. Stephens. It truly is a remarkable event not to be missed!
Christina Gauss
Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (Rumson, NJ)
For several years, I was an AATSP member, but not a very active one; however, after I attended my first conference in San Antonio, that all changed. I was inspired and energized by the presentations I saw and the connections
I made. For those of you who have never been to an annual conference, my advice is go! Invest in yourself and your professional development. Going to conference actually reignited my intellectual curiosity and pushed
me to pursue my PhD.
