SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED

Regular Session

  • A session is 45 minutes in length (30-minute presentation and 15 minutes for questions and discussion).
  • A session deals with topics related to the teaching and learning of language, literature, linguistics and/or culture of the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking world.
  • A session can have one to three (1-3) presenters who explain or describe the topic in an engaging format to the attendees; discussion and audience participation is encouraged.
  • Session presenters should avoid reading a paper to the attendees.

Closed

Academic Paper

  • An academic paper presents research about a topic related to language, literature, culture, pedagogy or linguistics.
  • It is a maximum of 30 minutes in length and is read aloud to the audience.
  • There should be a minimum of 10 minutes reserved for questions and discussion after the paper has been read.
  • Evaluation of proposals for academic papers and panels will be based on clarity of focus, relevance of the topic to the field, and quality of content and purpose (design, framework, methodology, findings, and sources).

Practice-Oriented Paper

  • A practice-oriented paper focuses on specific classroom applications, techniques, and activities related to a topic, rather than a general discussion about a topic.
  • It is a maximum of 25 minutes in length for a single presenter, with 10 minutes dedicated to content with practical tips and 10 minutes for questions and discussion.

Graduate Student Day Competition 

  • The Third Annual Graduate Student Day Competition will be held during the 105th AATSP Annual Conference. Graduate Student Day is a competition for the best graduate student presentation.
  • The competition is for students seeking master’s, specialist's, and/or doctoral degrees.
  • Please consult the AATSP Mission Statement for appropriate submission topics that include research in Literary and Cultural Studies and the Language Sciences relating to the study and teaching of Spanish and Portuguese.
  • If your proposal is selected for presentation, detailed information about the competition will be sent to you.
  • During the competition, participants will present their research in front of a panel of judges. There will be 2-3 presentations during a 45-minute presentation period. Each participant will limit their presentation to 11 minutes .

E-Poster

  • E-poster presentations use an electronic format operated from a laptop computer. Traditional formats such as poster boards cannot be used.
  • E-Poster presentations should be between 5 and 10 minutes in length to allow for multiple presentations during the 45-minute allotted time session.
  • During the 45-minute session, the presenter(s) will stand by their computer and give the presentation to a small audience (generally 1-5 people at a time)
  • An E-poster presentation consists of a brief outline of the important features or concepts of a research project, lesson plan, classroom materials, and/or cultural update.
  • The attendees will listen to the brief presentation and discuss the topic further with the presenter(s).
  • The presentation may be repeated 3-5 times during the allotted 45-minute session, giving several attendees the opportunity to interact one-on-one with the presenter(s).
  • Presenters may provide handouts with additional information for the attendees.
  • Presenters must bring their own computer and other electronic device that will be needed for the presentation.

Exhibitor/Vendor Session

  • A exhibitor/vendor session is 45 minutes in length (30-minute presentation and 15 minutes for questions and discussion).
  • A exhibitor/vendor session deals with topics related to the teaching and learning of language, literature, linguistics and/or culture of the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking world.
  • A exhibitor/vendor session can have one to three (1-3) presenters who explain or describe the topic in an engaging format to the attendees; discussion and audience participation is encouraged.
  • Exhibitors/Vendors must be registered as a conference exhibitor/sponsor/advertiser to submit a proposal.
  • Exhibitors/Vendors receive this opportunity as a means to augment their presence at the conference.
  • Exhibitor/Vendor sessions are identified as such in the conference program.
  • The AATSP strictly prohibits the sale of materials or services in sessions and workshops during the conference. Presenters may provide information on how to access materials and services but financial transactions are not permitted during sessions or workshops.

Workshop 

  • Workshops are 3 hours in length and deal with topics in more depth than is possible during a session. Topics can include the teaching and learning of language, literature, linguistics and/or culture of the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking world.
  • Workshops can have one to three (1-3) presenters.
  • Attendees pay a $25 fee to attend the workshop and expect to receive an in-depth treatment of the topic as well as handouts and other resources.
  • Workshops must include an explanation of the theoretical background of the topic. However, most of the workshop must be interactive and allow the attendees time to have hands-on practice with the concepts, ideas, and techniques presented, followed by discussions and questions.
  • Evaluation of proposals for workshops will be based on timeliness and relevance of topic, clarity of purpose and expected outcomes, content knowledge of presenter, organization and procedures, and takeaways and post-workshop availability.
  • Only a very limited number of workshop proposals are accepted each year.
  • The AATSP waives the conference registration fee for one workshop presenter per workshop.

Panel of Academic Papers

  • Academic papers present research about a topic related to language, literature, culture, pedagogy or linguistics.
  • An academic panel lasts 45 minutes and consists of 2-3 academic papers treating a similar theme or topic.
  • There should be 10-15 minutes for questions and discussion after papers have been read.
  • A chair, selected by the panel members, is responsible for submitting the proposal and all the information concerning the panel. During the panel presentation, the chair serves at the moderator for the session.
  • The chair may also read a paper during the session.
