AATSP Lifetime Achievement Award

The AATSP Lifetime Achievement Award is a relatively new award that was created and bestowed on two deserving members, Domnita Dumitrescu and Judith Park, in 2019 and Emily Spinelli in 2020. The award is a tribute to leadership, service, dedication, and commitment to the AATSP throughout one's career.

The 2022 AATSP Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Dr. Mary-Anne Vetterling of Regis College, Lexington, Massachusetts. Dr. Vetterling has been an AATSP member for nearly fifty years, serving the national association and her local AATSP Chapter, Massachusetts Bay, in various capacities. For six years from 1997-1999 and 2002- 2004, she served on the AATSP Board of Directors, including as President in 2003. Vetterling has also been the recipient of several AATSP awards. At the national level, she received the AATSP Distinguished Service Award (2005) and Teacher of the Year Award (2012). Currently, Vetterling serves as Editor of the Conference Wrap-Up.

Awardee Statement:
Thank you, muchas gracias, muito obrigada, AATSP, for the marvelous Lifetime Achievement Award, which is the crowning jewel in my long and wonderful career. It has been a multifaceted career that will keep on providing me with fascinating opportunities for the rest of my life. Furthermore, as the daughter of an AATSP Chapter President, my entire life has benefited from the AATSP. Whether it was those piles of Hispanias that dwarfed the TV in my parents’ bedroom, or my own activities once I started teaching and joined the AATSP some fifty years ago, I have found numerous opportunities for professional growth as a life-long learner of world languages, literatures, and cultures and also as a leader, researcher, reviewer, writer, travel buff, presenter, chapter officer, Board Member, President, editor of Enlace and its grandchild the Conference Wrap-Up, and much more! Most importantly, it has been the people, the AATSP members, on the local, national, and international levels, who have broadened my horizons and given me the encouragement, inspiration, and support that have made it possible for me to have such an immensely rewarding and satisfying career. I look forward to seeing and socializing with AATSP members in beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico this summer and plan to come with cameras ready to document the stimulating activities and events of our 104th Annual Conference. It is indeed a great honor and an immense pleasure to be a part of this wonderful organization. ¡Viva la AATSP!
