Carreira Announces Retirement as Executive Director of the American Association of Teachers of Spani

Dr. María Carreira, Executive Director of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), has announced that she will retire from her position effective June 30, 2027. Carreira assumed the role of Executive Director in July 2023 after a career in higher education. Prior to joining the AATSP, she served for more than three decades as Professor of Spanish Linguistics at California State University, Long Beach, and as Co-Director and Co-founder of the National Heritage Language Resource Center at UCLA. Throughout her career, she has advocated for heritage language education, teacher preparation, and the importance of US Spanish and Latinos to the future of the language profession in the US and the world. In announcing her decision, Carreira said: "Serving as Executive Director of the AATSP has been the greatest honor and professional privilege of my life. During these years, I have learned far more than I could ever have imagined: from extraordinary teachers whose passion for their students and for our profession has inspired me every day, from colleagues whose vision and generosity have challenged me to aim higher, and from the many partner associations whose collaboration has broadened our horizons and created new opportunities for our members. Along the way, I have also been blessed with friendships that I will treasure for the rest of my life. As I look toward retirement from this position, I am excited to return more fully to the work that first called me to this profession: conducting research, writing, and collaborating with teachers to develop new approaches that strengthen the teaching and learning of Spanish and Portuguese. Although I am stepping away from administrative leadership, I look forward to continuing to serve what I consider to be the greatest profession in the world and to remaining an active member of the AATSP community for many years to come." A Search Committee has been appointed to oversee the recruitment process, with the goal of identifying a successor during the 2026–2027 academic year to assume the position on July 1, 2027.
