Sonia Puerta-Quinn
2019 Elementary School Level Teacher of the Year

The AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Elementary Level is Sonia Puerta-Quinn who teaches at Episcopal Day School in Augusta, Georgia. As Spanish Department Coordinator, Sonia Puerta-Quinn was this year’s Georgia Chapter’s Teacher of the Year recipient, having been named Teacher of the Year by FLAIR in 2015.

According to her Chapter president, Sonia has “demonstrated her passion and dedication for the profession, particularly working with young children.” She keeps students motivated and engaged with a multimodal approach to teaching and learning. Sonia’s Headmaster credits her “increasingly rigorous and engaging” Spanish curriculum for the outstanding results on the National Spanish Exam. “Since she has stepped into the profession,” writes a colleague, “Sonia has been a dynamo, preparing her elementary students for success in the high school classroom,” while her principal adds, “her strong commitment to sharing and teaching is only a small part of the kind of person Sonia is.”

Her activism extends throughout the Hispanic community, where she serves as a board member of Asociacion Latina de Servicios, which provides free medical care. In the words one of her colleagues, Sonia is “an inspiration to us all.”
