GWENDOLYN BARNES-KAROL
St. Olaf College; Northfield, MN
Gwendolyn Barnes-Karol has been a member of the AATSP for some forty years and during that time has served the organization admirably and in a variety of ways. She has championed numerous initiatives to increase member benefits and make the organization more visible. Throughout her career, Gwen has been very active in the AATSP Minnesota Chapter. She has chaired committees, served on the Mesa Directiva, and provided numerous sessions and workshops for the chapter. Her work at the chapter level culminated in serving as its President in 2014–15. Gwen also participates enthusiastically at the national level of the organization. As a renowned scholar in the fields of twentieth-century Spanish literature and culture and Spanish language acquisition, she has contributed to Hispania as an author and reviewer of scholarly articles. In addition, she is a regular presenter at the AATSP annual conference. A colleague noted that Gwen’s conceptualization of service revolves around the contribution of time and effort so that the future of Spanish study, instruction, and scholarship can continue to progress. Another colleague stated that “Gwen is a role model of what service to our profession and to the AATSP should look like.”
