2013 Outstanding Scholarly Publication

The Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award is given for a scholarly article published in Hispania. The Award was established by the Executive Council at it's July 2012 meeting; the Award is being presented for the first time at the 2013 Conference. The focus of the award alternates on an annual basis. The focus for all odd-numbered years is literature, film, and culture while the focus for even-numbered years is linguistics and language science/pedagogy. Thus, the focus for the 2013 award is literature, film, and culture.

The winner of the 2013 Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award is Lorraine Ryan; University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Lorraine Ryan is the recipient of this Award for her essay entitled "The Development of Child Subjectivity in La lengua de las mariposas", which appeared in Hispania 95(3): 448-460 (2012). The members of the Committee had the following comments about this article:
This article demonstrates many important qualities that made it a clear and unanimous choice for the award. These included its originality, thorough command of the extant literature, its interdisciplinarity, its rigorous scholarship, its lucid prose, and its excellent cultural analysis. As a study of a specific cinematic production, an area that has gained increasing importance in recent years, this essay is a model for Film Studies.
