Crisis in Ukraine (AATSP)

Monday, February 28, 2022
Dear Colleagues,

The invasion of Ukraine and the unrelenting acts of violence have prompted us to ask what we can do to help, at home and abroad.

As educators, we are looking at a variety of ways we can help students and colleagues. If you are able, the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), and American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) encourage you to look to the Institute for International Education's emergency funds, specifically their Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, that supports Ukrainian students, scholars, and artists under threat.

NOW:

IIE’s Emergency Student Fund will rush aid to Ukrainian students in need who are studying at U.S. colleges and universities. Support IIE’s Emergency Student Fund to rush financial assistance to these students.

IN THE WEEKS AHEAD:

We anticipate an urgent need to support threatened and displaced scholars in the region. Help these individuals through IIE’s Scholar Rescue Fund.

With every crisis that emerges, artists are directly and severely affected. The impact will have dire ramifications for artists in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Give to IIE’s Artist Protection Fund to secure the safety of artists in peril.

We expect an influx of displaced and refugee students in need of support to continue their educations. Aid students throughout the application, admission, and academic degree programs so they can persevere despite all odds.

Support from language educators will be welcome during this time of disruption, violence, and uncertainty. Our collective desire is for peace.

Todos a una. Todos por um. Paz.

Sincerely,

Sheri Spaine Long, PhD
