AATSP SEARCH FOR
AATSP LIAISON TO THE MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION
 

 

The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) seeks applications from qualified persons to serve as the next AATSP Liaison to the Modern Language Association (MLA).  

 

The main responsibility of the AATSP Liaison to the MLA is to organize and present the AATSP session at the annual MLA Convention. As an affiliate organization of the MLA, the AATSP has been granted one session at the annual Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention. The AATSP Liaison to the MLA is the person who organizes that session on behalf of the AATSP. The AATSP offers a small travel stipend to help offset travel or conference expenses related to the MLA Convention. Please see below for the job description of the MLA Liaison.

 

Applicants for the position should submit the following:

  • a letter describing their experience and qualifications for the position and explaining why they believe they would serve well in the position
  • a current curriculum vitae
  • the names of two professional references

 

The deadline for submission is Sunday, October 31, 2021, by midnight Central Time.

Following are the basic responsibilities and features of the AATSP Liaison to the Modern Language Association (MLA):

  1. The AATSP Liaison to the Modern Language Association (MLA) must be a current member of the AATSP and of the MLA.
  2. The MLA Liaison serves a three-year term. The term is non-renewable.
  3. The main responsibility of the MLA Liaison is to organize and present the AATSP Session at the annual MLA Convention.
    1. The AATSP has been granted one session at the annual Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention. We are granted that session as an affiliate organization of the MLA. The AATSP Liaison to the MLA is the person who organizes that session on behalf of the AATSP.
    2. Generally, the session is a panel composed of three academic papers related to a specific theme or topic.
    3. The Liaison serves as the chair/organizer and can also be one of the three panel members. However, the Liaison can serve simply as the session chair/organizer without reading a paper.
    4. The topic for the session can be language, linguistics, culture, film, literature, or any other topic that falls within the MLA Convention guidelines. The topic should vary over the years.
    5. The language represented by the session can be either Spanish or Portuguese or a combination of the two. Both Spanish and Portuguese should be represented across the years.
  4. The MLA Liaison communicates with the MLA office and informs them of the name and contact information pertaining to the AATSP Liaison to the MLA.
  5. The MLA Liaison communicates with the AATSP Executive Director in advance of submitting the MLA conference proposal to work out the details for the session.
  6. The MLA Liaison then informs the MLA about the AATSP session by submitting the proposal and other necessary information.
  7. The MLA Liaison must submit an annual report outlining the work completed for the year.
  8. The AATSP offers a small travel stipend of $1000 to help offset travel or conference expenses related to the MLA Convention. 
  9. The position begins on January 10, 2022.
