SEARCH FOR MANAGING EDITOR OF HISPANIA The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) is seeking a Managing Editor for its highly acclaimed academic journal Hispania, published quarterly. Since the journal maintains a virtual office, the work is done remotely. The position offers flexible hours and carries a three-year contract beginning January 1, 2022, and ending December 31, 2024, with an option for renewal. The Managing Editor of Hispania is a part-time, contracted position with a flat rate fee without benefits. The selected candidate for the position will need to be available in mid-October, November, and December 2021 for training for the position. The Managing Editor is appointed by the Board of Directors of the AATSP and reports to the Editor-in-Chief of Hispania. The Managing Editor will be reviewed annually. The ideal candidate must work well independently and demonstrate the following qualifications: - Experience with the editorial processes and procedures of a scholarly journal
- Experience with the production of a scholarly journal and a digital publication process
- Experience with on-line submission and tracking of manuscripts
- Ph.D. or M.A. in a field related to one of the languages of the journal preferred
- Proficiency in English and Spanish required, proficiency in Portuguese highly desired
- Copy editing and proofing experience
- Experience with the MLA Style Manual highly desired
The Managing Editor is responsible for the oversight of the processes related to the publication of each issue of the journal. The responsibilities can be placed into two major categories: (1) Administration and supervision of the on-line submission and initial review process and (2) Responsibilities related to the quarterly production of the journal. I. Administration and Supervision of the Online Submission and Initial Review Process - ASSIST EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to stay within budget allocations and meet fiduciary responsibilities, provide the Editor-in-Chief with an annual written report including quantitative and qualitative data as requested by AATSP leadership, and collate files/draft memo/initiate the Outstanding Article competition each December
- ASSIST EDITORIAL TEAM: Assist the Book/Media Review Editor as needed; Train the Assistant/Associate Managing Editor and supervise their work
- WEB/SOCIAL MEDIA/SCHOLAR ONE: Oversee the web site and social media content related to the journal, making changes as needed, preparing media blasts and working with potential authors and technical support staff to resolve issues related to the Scholar One system
- INITIAL MANUSCRIPT REVIEW: Carry out initial process review of received manuscripts within two weeks of their submission to Scholar One system—including 1) verification that authors are current members of the AATSP throughout the review and publication period, 2) verification that IRB approval is documented as relevant, 3) anonymity of the author is preserved in the submitted file, 4) permissions are received and logged for any images
- ANNUAL CONFERENCE: Attend the AATSP annual conference and assist the Editor-in-Chief with reports and informational sessions at the conference
- ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: To be determined by the Editor of Hispania and/or the Executive Director of the AATSP
II. Tasks related to the quarterly production of the journal - OVERSEE QUARTERLY PRODUCTION: Monitor publication deadlines, process accepted manuscripts for publication, ensure quality design of tables and figures, proper placement and verified permissions of images, correspond with authors to get their approval on copy edits and proofs to finalize queries and missing information, work with authors, editorial team, and external production partners to bring each issue (March, June, September, December) to print/online publication ahead of schedule
- COPY EDITING: Copy edit and proof at least 25% of journal content. Recruit, supervise and finalize the work of the other copy editors editing each quarter’s journal content, including the front matter, articles, and reviews; check corrections and finalize second pages; continue to copy edit at the proof stages to catch any remaining errors
- EXTERNAL PRODUCTION STAGE: Prepare each number for submission to Sheridan Press and Johns Hopkins University Press (JHUP), including updated front matter content, new article, and review content, running heads, and paging instructions; answer queries or troubleshoot on each number as needed
- SERVE AS LIAISON: Work closely with journal’s external partners such as Johns Hopkins University Press, Sheridan Press, the Council of Editors of Learned Journals, JSTOR, and Project Muse
