Vásquez Named New AATSP President

The Board of Directors welcomes Martha Vásquez as the 98th President of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Currently she is the District Coordinator for World Languages in the San Antonio Independent School District.  


Martha has served as the World Languages and Cultures Lead Teacher and District Coordinator for World Languages where she has coached and mentored numerous teachers. She has taught at the high school and college levels where she has been honored locally for her contributions to service-centered instruction while growing enrollment, instructional quality, and student participation. 


Martha has had the honor of serving as a College Board Reader with college and university professors for the Spanish Language and Culture Exam as well as the Spanish Literature and Culture Exam.


She holds two master’s degrees. One degree is in Spanish Language with a concentration in Hispanic Cultures from the University of Texas at San Antonio and another in Educational Administration from Concordia University in Austin, Texas. 


Lastly, she is a member of the San Antonio AATSP chapter. As an active member of the national AATSP Board of Directors, she has led various initiatives and committees. In 2017, Martha was voted President Elect of the AATSP. She began to serve as president on September 1, 2018 and will preside at the AATSP’s 101st Annual Conference in San Diego, CA, and serve throughout 2019. President Vásquez succeeds Bill VanPatten who resigned from the AATSP presidency effective August 31, 2018.
