Afrodescendencia/Afro-descendência in Spanish and Portuguese Programs

250-word abstracts for 10- to 12-minute papers on innovative approaches to incorporating afrodescendencia / afro-descendência into Spanish and Portuguese programs including, but not limited to: curriculum at all levels, community-based learning, study abroad, anti-racist pedagogies.
• curriculum at all levels: from highlighting Afrodescendencia/Afrodescendência in first- and second-year Spanish and Portuguese curricula to creating specialized conversation & composition, culture, cinema, and/or literature courses;
• a focus on Afrolatinx communities in community-based learning and/or academic civic engagement courses in the U.S.;
• incorporating Afrodescendencia/Afrodescendência into study abroad experiences in Spanish-or Portuguese-speaking countries;
• Afrodescendencia/Afrodescendência and anti-racist pedagogies;
• interdisciplinary curricular initiatives and collaboration with other programs/departments.
PLEASE NOTE: This is the AATSP's guaranteed session at MLA. All abstracts will be acknowledged, and presenters selected for the session must confirm their participation prior to March 30. Presenters selected for the session must be members of both AATSP and MLA by April 7, 2021. Call for Papers at MLA 2022 Cultures of Portuguese-Speaking Countries Please direct inquiries and send 250-word abstracts to: Marcus Brasileiro, Department of Languages, Philosophy and Communication Studies, Utah State University, marcus.brasileiro@gmail.com DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS: March 18, 2021. 250-word abstracts for 10- to 12-minute papers on the methodological and epistemological challenges/opportunities of teaching the cultures of the Portuguese-speaking countries around the world: - Curriculum at all levels: from highlighting the concepts and methodologies in all levels of the teaching of the cultures and literature of the Portuguese speaking countries.
- We are interested in discussing the linguistics, conceptual challenges, and creative solutions to the teaching of culture and literature.
- Discussion of the specificities of Portuguese programs and the challenges/opportunities to implement upper division courses.
- Discussions/exposition of creative approaches to culture and literature in the Portuguese
PLEASE NOTE: This is the AATSP's NON-GUARANTEED session at MLA. All abstracts will be acknowledged, and presenters will be chosen in March. Presenters selected for the session must be members of both the AATSP and the MLA by April 7, 2021.
