Belonging in Spanish Heritage Language Learning: Leveraging Peer-to-Peer Tutoring for Equitable Pedagogies

In this presentation, I will argue for the intentional and sustained inclusion of heritage language and literacy practices in the development of Spanish Heritage Language non-traditional pedagogical frameworks that leverage students’ translingual repertoires as part of their learning experience. I support said claim through empirical data published in my book, The Peer-Effect: Non-Traditional Models of Instruction (Routledge, 2023) which illustrates the crucial role of heritage peer-to-peer tutors in sustaining belonging for heritage students’ language learning trajectories.
