This webinar aims to introduce language teachers to learner corpora (i.e., large collections of texts containing language data produced by L2 learners) as a source to create authentic pedagogical materials. When: Friday, May 19, 2023 Session Length: 120-minute Session + 30-min Q&A Where: Zoom TBA Who: This webinar is designed for current and future language teachers. Registration Cost: No charge but registration is required. Webinar Agenda: The following topics will be discussed at the webinar: - Basic concepts in corpus linguistics
- A definition of corpora and corpus linguistics
- Basic tools and techniques in corpus linguistics
- Pedagogical applications of corpora, esp. learner corpora
- Direct vs. Indirect applications
- Learner corpora and their affordances in the language classroom
- Sample corpus-informed teaching materials
- Development of data-driven activities
- Basic principles of designing effective and engaging teaching materials
- Step-by-step process of creating corpus-informed materials using a real example
Examples presented during the webinar will be in English, Spanish and French. However, the content can be applied to a variety of languages.
