Below are links to materials used during the ceremony.

Introduction from Mark Del Mastro:

"As many are aware, this 105th annual AATSP conference in Salamanca will be Sheri Spaine-Long’s last as our Executive Director. Ask an AATSP friend, partner or member how they might best characterize Sheri’s work over the years, and you will hear repeatedly the terms “mentor,” “supportive,” “generous,” “transformative,” “gran ejemplo,” “impactful,” “kind,” “friend,” “leader,” “courageous,” “visionary,” “compassionate,” “inspirational,” “collaborative,” “educator,” “editor,” “inclusive,” and “partner,” among many others.

Of these descriptors, in my view, 2 are the most encompassing: “collaborative” and “partner.” Recognizing that cultivating collaborative relationships and meaningful partnerships is in the best interest of all parties involved, Sheri has built upon the fine work of her predecessors by ensuring that the AATSP remains strong and relevant by working diligently with colleagues and entities that share our association’s values and mission. Join me in reflecting on my journey as an educator as we take stock of AATSP accomplishments over the last few years.

¡Todos a una! Todos por um!

Background

The AATSP developed me as a teacher-leader, scholar and researcher, colleague, humanities professor, and administrator. I have always been proud to be a teacher. While studying for my master’s degree in Spanish, I joined the AATSP upon recommendation of my professors at the University of Iowa in 1981. I was all in. I loved being a Teaching Assistant and had recently returned from a semester at the Universidad de Sevilla. Later, I pursued my doctorate at UCLA, and I recall fondly decorating our student apartment with quarterly issues of Hispania. The AATSP’s flagship journal was ever present for inspiration and citation before Hispania became available online.

Through the years, I participated in over thirty AATSP Annual Conferences. I served as Alabama’s AATSP Chapter President (1994), Hispania Editor (2010-2018), and most recently as the AATSP Executive Director (2018-2023). It has been an honor and privilege to support teachers in this unique leadership role. I have been fortunate to be a member of the AATSP Board of Directors for thirteen years and will remain on the Board as Executive Director Emerita through June 30, 2024.

The Pandemic Executive Director

My executive directorship was defined by the pandemic. The job description of the AATSP Executive Director (ED) is found in the AATSP bylaws. The ED hones the collective vision of the Association in tandem with the Board of Directors. While managing all daily operations and finances, the ED is the AATSP’s official representative. During the tumult of COVID-19, we worked to support teachers while some were unable to continue. This difficult time of uncertainty shrank most organizations. Consequently in 2023, I am happy to report that the AATSP is on track to attain its pre-pandemic membership numbers. The AATSP is now poised for membership growth and is on firm financial footing.

For the AATSP, the pandemic years were productive and pivotal. We (re)considered our collective identity and rebranded. Educators and students from all backgrounds are essential to the AATSP. Like others during the COVID crisis, we focused on digital resources and revamped the AATSP website with our new more inclusive image.

The AATSP Annual Conference was not overlooked during the pandemic. Cautiously, we staged two successful in-person annual conferences in Atlanta, Georgia (2021) and San Juan, Puerto Rico (2022). The 105th AATSP Annual Conference at the Universidad de Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain (2023) is poised to be our largest event in recent years with registrants and co-registrants of over 1,000. I invite you to read my conference welcome statement. A strong annual conference is the marker of a healthy association with engaged members.

Association Matters

Formally affiliating with a professional association such as the AATSP allows us to express our passion for teaching Spanish and Portuguese and to develop in a broader context. My enthusiasm for and commitment to Spanish coincided with the rise of Spanish in the United States (US) in the 1970s when I was in high school. Blissfully today, Spanish in the US offers us the whole package: it is an undeniably eloquent language of study as well as the proud daily language of many living in the US and their offspring. The economic and linguistic prowess of Spanish in the US is irrefutable. Spanish garners well over 50% of all language enrollments at all levels of instruction in the US. My annual membership investment helps support the shared language enterprise.

Of course, the AATSP does not live by Spanish alone. In the past, large universities housed Departments of Spanish and Portuguese. Because of this, I also enjoyed the study of Portuguese during my graduate studies. I recently wrote about my ongoing relationship with Portuguese as an AATSP member and summarized the AATSP’s key Portuguese accomplishments in The Portuguese Newsletter. On my last day as Executive Director, I will be with fifty AATSP members at our Portuguese Symposium at the Escola Superior de Educação Politécino de Porto, Porto, Portugal.

Teaching’s Infinite Power

The value of language teaching and learning knows no boundaries because it is rooted in cross-cultural understanding. Having spent the lion’s share of my career in Alabama, I am gratified to have contributed to the education of an underserved population of learners. This allowed me to impact students that might not have had access to language learning, cross-cultural skills, and the values that we associate with it. Besides Alabama, I taught in Iowa, California, Colorado, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. My years as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the US Air Force Academy granted me the exploration of the connection between language learning and leadership development. Knowing multiple languages and cultures helps produce good leaders.

Therefore, the work of language teachers is enormously important and has a deep impact on the lives of our students and our society. I have written hundreds of support letters for colleagues for promotion, tenure, and other accolades. The US educational system sadly does not incentivize and recognize even the most talented. Educators need more support than they currently receive for their essential work. A language educator’s job is tough but rewarding. Still, we teach. We must support each other through Association.

Coda

I am proud of the long history of teacher-leaders in the AATSP. I have been privileged to work with board members and educators of the highest quality as well as dedicated staff. All that has been achieved over the last few years has been because of their praiseworthy efforts. Thank you for all your love, support, and collaboration.

To learn more about, our accomplishments and the state of the AATSP in 2023, view slides [PDF] from my final annual report.

As I transition from the art of working to the art of living, I look forward to landing the plane. I will relinquish the cockpit to my successor, the creative and talented María Carreira, who undoubtedly will take the AATSP to new heights.

Sincerely,

Sheri Spaine Long, PhD
AATSP Executive Director

Plaza Mayor, Madrid

Spaine Long Announces Departure from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BIRMINGHAM, AL—Sheri Spaine Long, AATSP’s Executive Director, announced recently that she will retire from her position on June 30, 2023. Spaine Long has been Executive Director of AATSP since 2018 and prior to that served as the Editor of the AATSP’s flagship journal Hispania for eight years.

In announcing her decision, Spaine Long stated, “I have been honored to lead our 105-year-old association and the exceptional community of Spanish and Portuguese language teachers, professors, researchers, and administrators. Despite the pandemic, the AATSP proved resilient and vibrant as we achieved much together. It redefined our collective identity to face those challenges of pandemic instruction and the ever changing world in which we teach. It represents a period of achievement, redefinition, and resiliency as we weathered the pandemic years together.

It has been my honor to work with the outstanding AATSP Board Members over the years and implement our values that emphasize the commitment of our organization to diversity, inclusion, access, and equitable treatment of all teachers and students. We have been committed to serving our many members who advocate for Spanish and Portuguese as critical to the curriculum in PreK-12 and higher education in the United States and beyond. Spanish instruction has unique challenges as the nation’s most taught and spoken second language and as a heritage language. Portuguese faces impediments due to lack of access to instruction. Advocacy for Spanish and Portuguese language programs will continue as language learning is key to workforce development and all humanistic enterprise. I have been privileged to work with our dedicated AATSP staff who share my passion for languages and cultures. I leave with a sense of our team’s accomplishments and its future success.”

AATSP President Rachel Mamiya Hernández said, “Sheri Spaine Long’s leadership guided our organization through some of the toughest moments in its history brought about by the pandemic. Her dedication, vision, and forward thinking have positioned us well to continue our mission over the next hundred years.”

The AATSP Board of Directors will form a search and screening committee to oversee recruitment. The process will commence in August with the goal to have a new Executive Director identified by early 2023 to assume duties on July 1, 2023. “The Board of Directors of the AATSP recognizes the vital role this position plays in the long-term health, sustainability, and success of the organization. For this reason, we are committed to keeping our membership updated on the search as we progress,” Mamiya Hernández said.

About AATSP:

Founded in 1917, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) is the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive language-specific professional association in the United States. Our nearly 10,000 members are educators from PreK-16+ who endorse our mission to promote, develop, and advance the teaching of Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and related languages and cultures in the United States and in other countries. The AATSP’s programs, publications, and projects include the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, National Spanish and Portuguese Exams, Hispania, Spanish and Portuguese Review, National Teach Portuguese Week, National Teach Spanish Week among others. The Association awards scholarships to outstanding teachers and students annually. The AATSP will hold its 105th Annual Conference in Salamanca, Spain in 2023. The AATSP is a 501(c)(3).
AATSP Bestows Founder's Award on the Consejería de Educación en Estados Unidos y Canadá

Dr. Jesús Fernández González, Consejero de Educación en Estados Unidos y Canadá, will accept the award. The Founder's Award is a relatively new award and one of the AATSP's highest honors. The Founder's Award was created to recognize individuals or entities that have a long history of collaboration with the AATSP and have played a foundational role in building the Association and supporting Spanish and/or Portuguese instruction in the United States. The Consejería de Educación en EEUU y Canadá truly embodies the spirit of the Founder’s Award. The AATSP is grateful for our partnership and shared mission.

The relationship between the AATSP and the Consejería de Educación has been-and continues to be-a rich, long-standing collaboration that extends for decades. The Consejería is a model of mutual support of our shared mission of sustaining and developing teachers of Spanish of all levels in the US and beyond, as well as sharing our passion for the beautiful languages and cultures of Spain and the varieties of Spanish worldwide. The AATSP recognizes the outstanding educational outreach programs of the Consejería de Educación that have encouraged mobility and the development of US teachers and students.

Since 1986, the Consejería has supported over 10,000 Spanish visiting teachers to the US and outbound supports over 3,500 US and Canadian language assistants annually who travel to Spain to help teach English (and French) in elementary and secondary schools while they learn, perfect, and maintain their Spanish and develop a deeper understanding of the diverse cultures of Spain.

Among the Consejería de Educación’s other programs are School of the Year Contest, Summer Courses in Spain for Teachers and Administrators, International Spanish Programs in American Schools, and the Consejería maintains numerous Spanish Resource Centers throughout the US and Canada. We invite you to explore the Consejería’s many opportunities for students and teachers of Spanish at www.educacionyfp.gob.es/eeuu/en_US/.

Who was Lawrence Wilkins?

Lawrence Wilkins was a founding member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish (AATS) as the Association was known at the time. The genesis of the AATS began in 1914 with organizing the teachers of Spanish in New York City. In the years that followed, Wilkins communicated with teachers of Spanish on all levels and areas of the country until finally on December 29, 1917, teachers of Spanish committed to the establishment of the AATS. He was the President of the AATSP in 1918-1920 and 1927. He also served as Vice President from 1921-1926. In addition to his service to the AATS, Wilkins served as assistant principal of DeWitt Clinton High School, and he ultimately became the Director of the NYC Board of Education's Bureau of Foreign Languages. He also wrote fourteen books on the teaching of Spanish. Wilkins certainly demonstrated a love for Spanish and showed great foresight with the creation of the Association.
