Graduate Student Session Stipend

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Thursday, January 31, 2019 for sessions to be presented at the 2019 AATSP Conference

The AATSP offers two Graduate Student Session Stipends distributed to each of the following Continuing Graduate Student Sessions:

  • Session 1: Graduate Student Research in Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Session 2: Graduate Student Research in the Language Sciences

Each Graduate Student Session Stipend consists of the following:

  • $1000 per session ($500 for two participants for each session) to help offset travel expenses associated with attending the conference and reading a paper in one of the Continuing Graduate Student Sessions
  • Conference registration for each of the two participants per session

This new Graduate Student Session Stipend is funded through the AATSP and the generous donation of Bill VanPatten, Professor of Spanish and Second Language Studies at Michigan State University.

Selection Criteria for Each Graduate Student Session

  1. Each session must consist of two papers, authored or co-authored by graduate students only. In addition, each session will also be chaired by one of the graduate student participants.
  2. Students whose papers are accepted for presentation will participate with the understanding that Spanish and Portuguese Review will have first right of refusal for publication. However, participation in either session does not guarantee publication by any division or organ of the AATSP.
  3. Priority for stipends will be for those students who have not received funding from the AATSP previously.
  4. During their graduate studies, students may receive a maximum of two of these Graduate Student Session stipends. Having received one of these stipends does not bar the student from receiving other awards or prizes not related to the Graduate Student Sessions
  5. Recipients of the stipends will be recognized at the annual celebration dinner during the AATSP conference.
  6. In the event that a stipend or multiple stipends are not awarded during a given year, those funds will be deposited into the next cycle of funding, and the number of awards increased appropriately. Should a student decline the stipend, it should be immediately awarded to a runner up.

  1. Applicants/Winners must be a member of the AATSP at the time of application and for the Conference year
  2. Winners must attend the entire AATSP Conference including special events.
  3. Winners must stay in the AATSP Conference Hotel for the duration of the conference.
  4. Winners must attend the annual Celebration Dinner to be recognized as a recipient of the Graduate Student Session Stipend. The Celebration Dinner will be held during the AATSP Conference in San Diego, California on July of 2019.
  5. After the Conference, winners must submit receipts for conference-related expenses (transportation, hotel, meals) for up to $500.00 to Kara Majchrowicz, Director of Financial Services, by August 15, 2019.
