AATSP 102nd Annual Conference


The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) is the United States’ leading organization in serving educators to support the teaching and learning of Spanish and Portuguese (K-16+). We provide a forum for instructors from the U.S. and abroad during our AATSP Annual Conference that includes 250-300 events during 3 1/2 days of discussions, workshops, sessions, exhibits, speeches, and awards that reflect trends, interests, and the needs of language educators.

Featured strands are: 

1. The Teaching and Learning of Spanish and Portuguese
Proposals that fit this strand may address one or more of the following topics.

  • Student Engagement for Proficiency—What Works?
  • Innovative Teaching and Curriculum (e.g., Language Acquisition, Technology, Gamification, Service Learning, Social Justice)
  • Performance/Feedback/Assessment
  • Teaching and Learning in Multilingual/Multicultural Settings
  • Heritage Language Instruction and Learning 2.0

2. The Future of the Profession
Proposals that fit this strand may address one or more of the following topics.

  • Professional Development for Teachers (all levels and delivery modes; traditional/non-traditional)
  • Mentorship Models for K-16+ Educators
  • Languages for Careers/Professions (e.g., Translation/Interpretation, Business, STEM)
  • Expanding our Footprint in K-12 (e.g., Seal of Biliteracy, Dual Language Learning)
  • Languages and the Power of Advocacy

3. Reshaping Literary and Linguistic Studies
Proposals that fit this strand may address one or more of the following topics.

  • Literature, Culture and Film in the Classroom
  • Literary and Cultural Studies 
  • Linguistic and Literary Community Engagement
  • Representations of Puerto Rican Migration and Other Diasporas

For planning purposes:

  • The 102nd Annual AATSP Conference will officially begin at 8:00 am on Thursday, July 9, and will end by noon on Sunday, July 12, 2020.There will be excursions planned for Wednesday and Sunday.
  • Early Bird conference registration will be $205 for AATSP members and $325 for non-members.
  • The Caribe Hilton discounted lodging rate for conference attendees will be $199/night plus taxes (non-conference hotel rate is $320/night).
  • Along with other carriers, discount airlines such as Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit and Southwest have flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico’s International Airport.
  • The Caribe Hilton is a 12-minute drive from San Juan’s International Airport.
  • Airport-Hotel taxi fee is $23.00 each way via Taxi Turístico.
