Summary of CV

Comfort Pratt is Associate Professor of Spanish in the Departments of Teacher Education and Curriculum and Instruction at Texas Tech University, where she has dedicated the last eleven years to training teachers. Prior to that, she was the Head of the Spanish Section at Northwestern State University of Louisiana for seven years, and Coordinator of the lower-level Spanish program at Texas Tech for three years, and both programs benefited immensely from her expertise in the communicative language teaching approach. She received her Ph.D. in Romance Linguistics from Louisiana State University, after obtaining other degrees from the University of Ghana, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and Texas A&M University. Her research areas include Hispanic linguistics, second language education, applied linguistics, and sociolinguistics, and she has authored two books titled El español del noroeste de Luisiana: pervivencia de un dialecto amenazado and In-Class Communicative Projects, which are used as textbooks. She has developed three study abroad programs in Madrid and Salamanca, Spain, and Santiago, Dominican Republic, which include field experience in schools. She has also initiated and developed various programs for Lubbock schools, including the annual Spanish Spelling Bee and poetry competitions, and the Spanish Teacher of the Year Award. Her current leadership roles include President of Texas Llano Estacado Chapter of the AATSP, Sigma Delta Pi Regional Vice President for the Southwest, and Chair of the Executive Council of the Texas Tech University Teaching Academy. She was the recipient of the AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award College/University Level in 2013.

Statement of Candidacy

My name is Comfort Pratt, and I am an Associate Professor of Spanish in the areas of Teacher Education and Bilingual Education at Texas Tech University. I also direct a study abroad program in Salamanca, Spain. I have been a member of the AATSP for over a decade, and I am the President of the Texas Llano Estacado Chapter, which I reactivated in 2013. I have served the AATSP in different capacities at the national level, including the Scholarships, Nominating, and Higher Education Committees, as well as the Higher Education Task Force and the 2018 Conference Program Committee. I was also the recipient of the AATSP Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award College/University Level in 2013. It would be an honor to serve as the College/University Representative on the Board of Directors of the AATSP, as I believe I could make substantial contributions to the association and the profession. If elected, my platform will focus on three things, namely, visibility, teacher education, and collaborations. I will make it a priority to promote our visibility and global recognition by networking more closely with language programs and other organizations, as a means to increasing membership of teachers and students. I will advocate for more emphasis on pre-service and in-service teacher training initiatives and access to information. I will also encourage more involvement in collaborations between the university-level and the K-12 level, in order to increase the pipeline of students majoring in Spanish and Portuguese. Thank you for your kind consideration! ¡Gracias! Obrigada!
