Summary of CV

Barb Pietroski has been a K-8 teacher in both public and private systems for 25 years as well as a high school teacher for twenty. She has created numerous curriculums for early childhood and been the voice for K-8 teachers within the Chicago Area chapter of AATSP since she became a member in 1982. She has made frequent and varied presentations at the local, state, and national levels, including topics such as writing and art, chants, pair practice, songs and poetry. She has presented numerous workshops aimed at making classroom cultural connections leading to adoption by Teachers’ Discovery.

Barb majored in Spanish at Bradley University and earned her master’s in Spanish language and culture at the University of Durango, Durango, Mexico. She has many post graduate hours from Northwestern University, Northeastern, National Lewis, and St. Xavier. She has traveled extensively in the U.S. and the Caribbean and shared her love of Mexico with her students by organizing homestays in Cuernavaca and Morelia.

Barb is an active member of the ICTFL and Central States, but her longstanding dedication has been to the Chicago Area Chapter of AATSP. She has been involved in all areas of planning and leadership within the Executive Council: President, Treasurer, Communication, Membership, Scholarship, Awards, Workshop, Website, and newsletter. During her presidency the Chicago Chapter was honored as Chapter of the Year. Barb herself was honored by the Chapter with the Distinctive Service Award. Barb is currently mentoring student teachers as Field Supervisor at National Lewis University in Chicago.

Statement of Candidacy

I’m Barb Pietroski, running for K-8 representative. My involvement with AATSP has been long and full. Back when few programs and professionals existed at the K-8 level, AATSP helped me connect to other teachers and resources and these connections have grown steadily. I’ve participated in conferences, the NSE and poster contests. I also have found great reward in being part of the Executive Board of my local Chicago Area Chapter. Over the years, I’ve been chapter president, treasurer, and chaired or co-chaired most of the chapter events. Currently I write a biweekly newsletter, maintain the website, manage membership, and facilitate student scholarships.

I have joyfully taught K-8 for 25 years, and I spent 20 years teaching high school students. This mix and range of levels has given me a unique perspective and built a sensitivity to secondary teachers. This extra phase of my career would allow me to understand programs, scholarships, and interests of a majority of AATSP members. I would be better able to discuss, analyze, judge, and vote on board issues.

If chosen to be the K-8 Representative, I would like to accomplish three things. First, I believe that every effort needs to be made to attract and keep more teachers from this level. Second, I’d like to collect more resources that serve this age group and highlight these on our website. Lastly, I’d like to work with the director of SHA to expand that honorary.

I hope to extend my leadership with the honor of your vote.
