Statement of Candidacy

Reciban mis cordiales saludos.

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself and communicate to you my vision statement as candidate.

I am Ana María González, Professor of Spanish and French at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas.

I qualify for the position of college/university representative of the AATSP board because I have been a language professor for more than 20 years. It is easy to say but it has been hard to accomplish! Why? Because many students no longer consider learning another language as a priority for their professional life and therefore, there is a tendency to consider foreign languages as a second-class subject. Consequently, departments across the country are being extremely affected by the lack of interest on behalf of the student population and the financial constraints that many colleges and universities are facing nowadays.

We all know that language is not merely a subject-matter, but an essential part of the human development as a whole. What can we do without languages in this increasingly connected world?

We need to consider the valuable contributions of technology that are facilitating language learning. It is very important to add technical tools to our teaching; however, we cannot let technology take our place! We are not teachers fighting for our jobs, we are educators working for a better society.

Let’s work together to preserve the humanistic component of language within the amazing frame of technology that is defining our daily life more than we ever expected.

Gracias! Muito obrigada! Thank you!
