Summary of CV

Stephanie Enseñat Davis was born in Geneva, Switzerland, where her father was a U.N. diplomat. Her family moved to Panama, where she attended primary, middle, and high school. She has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in French and Education from Louisiana State University and a Master’s degree in French from Middlebury College. Stephanie has taught various levels of Spanish, French, and English in schools in Panama, in Department of Defense Schools in the former Canal Zone, and in the United States. She has also taught ballet and was a member of the Ballet Nacional de Panamá. Stephanie currently teaches Pre-AP Spanish, AP Spanish Language and Culture, and Latin American Studies at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is also the President of the Louisiana Chapter of the AATSP, an office she has held since 2016. At Newman, she has helped redesign the Spanish-language curriculum, with an emphasis on content-based learning. The Latin American Studies course that she designed and currently co-teaches with a colleague from the History department has been a model of interdisciplinary collaboration, and she has backwards designed the Spanish track with an emphasis on oral proficiency. Stephanie’s passion for education extends beyond the classroom. Stephanie has served on the Board of Directors of the International School of Louisiana, and for the past 10 years, she has served as a Board member for Breakthrough New Orleans, an organization whose mission is to help at-risk students realize their potential and pursue a college education.

Statement of Candidacy

I was born in Switzerland while my father, a Panamanian citizen, was stationed there as a UN diplomat. We moved to Panama when I was 6 and I did all my schooling there until I went to University. Having grown up abroad and having spoken Spanish, English and French from a very young age, I see the benefits of having language as a tool in today’s global world.

Currently, I teach pre-AP classes, the AP Spanish Language and Culture class and a Global Studies Latin American Studies Class at Isidore Newman School. It has been an honor to serve as the AATSP Louisiana Chapter president, and as the high school representative for the Executive Board of the AATSP, my goal is to promote the teaching of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures in U.S. high schools. In today’s world more than ever, U.S. students must learn how to see the world from different perspectives. Quality Spanish grammar instruction provides a solid foundation from which to learn the basics of reading, writing, and conversation. Content–based Spanish language courses in history, literature, and film help students attain increased fluency while also giving them insight into the political, social, and cultural dynamics of the Hispanic world. I would like to bring my passion for teaching Spanish and my experience in curriculum development to the AATSP to help it in its mission to promote Spanish and inspire students to be life-long learners of Spanish.
