2016 Call for Proposals and Descriptions

  • Proposal Deadline: Sunday, November 15, 2015
  • Conference dates. The conference will take place July 8-11, 2016 in Miami, Florida. Please check your personal calendar and ensure you are available to present during these dates and in the conference city before you submit your proposal.
  • Proposal types. The AATSP Conference consists of a variety of session and workshop types. Before submitting a proposal, please read the descriptions of the proposal types outlined below.
  • Strands. The AATSP 2016 Conference will address four conference strands. Please read the descriptions of the strands outlined below.
  • Acceptance date. The AATSP will inform presenters in January 2016 whether or not their proposal has been accepted.
  • Scheduling date. Presenters will be notified of the date and time of their presentation by March 2016.

1. Graduate Student/Graduate Programs 
    Proposals that fit this strand may address one or more of the following topics:
    a) Mentoring PhD candidates; introduction to the profession
    b) Preparing PhD candidates for the jobs of the 21st century
    c) Innovative courses and programs that go beyond traditional literature/linguistics courses

2. Heritage Learners 
Proposals that fit this strand may address one or more of the following topics:
a) Specific courses for heritage learners
    b) Assessment of heritage learners
    c) Individualized instruction for heritage learners

3. Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) 
Proposals that fit this strand may address one or more of the following topics:
a) Spanish and Portuguese for the professions: medical, business, law enforcement
    b) Content-related courses and programs: K-12 and/or post-secondary
    c) Translation and interpretation programs

Teaching Culture
Proposals that fit this strand may address one or more of the following topics:
a) Integration of language and culture; culture as course content
    b) Development of cultural sensitivity through language learning
    c) Standards-based cultural units



The language used in conference proposals indicate the language of the actual presentation or paper that will be given. As you prepare your proposal, remember to use the same language for the session title and description and then give your presentation or paper in that same language.  EXAMPLE: If your title is written in English, then your description must be in English and your actual presentation must be given in English. Likewise, if your title and description are written in Portuguese, the presentation will be given in Portuguese. Even though the title and description are written in one language, examples in other languages may be used.   


  • ACADEMIC PAPER - 30 minutes
    • An academic paper presents research about a topic related to language, literature, culture or linguistics.
    • An academic paper is 15-20 minutes in length and is read aloud to the audience.
    • There should be time for questions and discussion after the paper has been read.
    • A 30-minute session consists of one academic paper.
    • The AATSP Conference Program Staff may form Panels of Academic Papers by combining individual proposals that treat similar topics. Once combined, the members of the newly formed panel will select a chair for the panel. The new panel will be scheduled in a 75-minute session block.
    • Some academic papers concern unique topics and cannot be combined. They will be presented alone, in 30-minute sessions as submitted.

    • Academic papers present research about a topic related to language, literature, culture or linguistics.
    • An academic panel lasts 75 minutes and consists of 2-4 academic papers treating a similar theme or topic.
    • There should be time for questions and discussion after papers have been read.
    • A chair, selected by the panel members, is responsible for submitting the proposal and all information concerning the panel. During the panel presentation, the chair serves as the moderator for the session.
    • The chair may also read a paper during the session.

  • e-POSTER PRESENTATION - 30 minutes or 75 minutes
    • AATSP e-Poster presentations use an electronic format operated from a laptop computer as opposed to a traditional format using poster boards.
    • An e-Poster presentation consists of a brief outline of the important features or concepts of a research project, lesson plan, classroom materials, and/or cultural update.
    • e-Posters are an effective way to discuss model projects and/or preliminary research results.
    • One to three presenters will prepare a PowerPoint presentation on their topic. The PowerPoint presentation will be projected onto a screen using a laptop computer and data (LCD) projector.
    • The PowerPoint Presentation will consist of
      • A maximum of five (5) PowerPoint slides
      • An oral presentation to accompany the PowerPoint presentation lasting a maximum of five (5) minutes
    • During the 30 or 75 minute session the presenter(s) will stand by their computer and give the presentation to a small audience (generally 1-5 people at a time).
    • The attendees will listen to the brief presentation and further discuss the topic with the presenter(s).
    • The presentation may be repeated 5-6 times during the session time block giving several attendees the opportunity to interact one-on-one with the presenter(s).
    • Presenters may provide handouts with additional information for the attendees.
    • Presenters must bring their own laptop computer for the e-Poster Presentation.
    • The AATSP will provide the data projector, screen and a small table for holding the laptop.

  • EXHIBITOR SESSION - 30 minutes or 75 minutes
    • You must be a registered conference exhibitor to submit an exhibitor proposal.
    • All conference exhibitors are entitled to one 30-minute or one 75-minute session during which they may present information related to the product or service they offer.
    • Exhibitors receive this opportunity as a means to augment their presence in the exhibit hall.
    • The session should focus on the teaching and learning of language, literature, linguistics and/or culture of the Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking world.
    • Exhibitor Sessions are identified as such in the conference program.
    • The AATSP strictly prohibits the sale of materials or services in sessions and workshops during the conference. Presenters may provide information on how to access materials and services but financial transactions are not permitted during sessions or workshops.

  • SESSION - 30 minutes or 75 minutes
    • A session treats topics related to the teaching and learning of language, literature, linguistics and/or culture of the Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking world.
    • Sessions can have one to three presenters who explain or describe the topic in an engaging format to the attendees; discussion and audience participation is encouraged.
    • A session can be 30 minutes or 75 minutes in length.
    • Session presenters should avoid reading a paper to the attendees.
    • Thirty-minute sessions submitted on similar topics may be combined by the AATSP into 75-minute sessions, in which case the presenters are informed and are expected to share the allotted time.

  • WORKSHOP - 3 hours or 6 hours
    • Workshops are 3 hours (half day) or 6 hours (full day) in length and treat topics in more depth than is possible during a 30- or 75-minute session. Topics can include the teaching and learning of language, literature, linguistics and/or culture of the Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking world.
    • Workshops can have one to three presenters.
    • Attendees pay an additional fee to attend the workshop and expect to receive an in-depth treatment of the topic and handouts to use as classroom resources.
    • Workshops should be interactive and allow the attendees time to practice the concepts and ideas presented.
    • Only a limited number of workshop proposals are accepted each year.

How are proposals selected for the program?

The AATSP uses a Program Selection Committee to read and rate the proposals submitted for the annual conference. The Program Selection Committee is composed of AATSP members who represent various educational levels, the Spanish and Portuguese languages, and areas of expertise including literature, linguistics/applied linguistics, film, and cultural studies. The Committee members rate the proposals based on the following five criteria:

1.       The topic is relevant to the intended audience.

2.       The session content is innovative and useful.

3.       The session content is based on up-to-date research in the field.

4.       The benefits to the participants in the session are clearly defined.

5.       The proposal is clearly written and the description is ready to be published in the

           conference program.
