Paragraph CV

During my college career I have focused on two areas of research—Brazilian and Spanish American theater, and Portuguese program development.   I have published and presented papers in both areas and have a book of scholarship on Latin American women’s drama, Latin American Women on/in Stages, SUNY Press, 2004.  I serve as the editor for the on-line publication Portuguese Language Journal, which dedicated volume #4 to "Building and Maintaining Portuguese programs”, and will publish volume #5 on "Portuguese as a Heritage Language” in the fall. I have been active on committees at the University of New Mexico, and active in national associations, especially the American Portuguese Studies Association.  Since 2004 I have been engaged in program evaluation and development at UNM and as a result of that work, I have introduced new courses into the Portuguese curriculum.  I teach language and content courses, and have developed intermediate level courses on speech acts, film-making, and Brazilian culture, as well as courses on literature, theater, and cinema.  I have directed summer study abroad programs in Brazil for several years, with the most recent in 2010 as a service learning course.  My recent research focuses on the growth of Portuguese enrollments in the USA and the needs of faculty in those growing programs. I continue to be interested in the research and practice of teaching Portuguese to Spanish speakers and the history of the relationship between the Spanish and Portuguese teachers in K-16 in the USA.

Statement of Candidacy

I want to thank Rob Anderson for his great work representing Portuguese.

I welcome the opportunity to serve AATSP as a member of the Executive Council and I look forward to working with my Spanish colleagues to grow and strengthen AATSP.  I believe that my experience in professional organizations, teaching, and research will be useful for continuing the work of revitalizing and developing new opportunities for the Portuguese membership.  I have been a member and active participant in AATSP conferences and have published in Hispania several times.  Previously I served on the Executive Committee of the American Portuguese Studies Association and then was elected to two terms as secretary ending in December of 2010.

As an instructor of Portuguese, I have taught a wide range of courses from beginning language courses to seminars on Brazilian and Latin American dramatists.  I regularly teach intermediate and advanced language and content courses.  I have directed traditional summer study abroad programs as well as a summer service learning course in Brazil.

Portuguese language study enrollments are at a record high right now in the USA, but even with over 11,000 students enrolled, there is a lot that can be done to grow enrollments, support instructors, and develop materials.  I believe that the AATSP can contribute to the professional development of Portuguese instructors in all of these areas and I plan to use my position on the Executive Council to encourage more activity in support of Portuguese.
