This year’s conference will highlight materials in Arabic, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Kiswahili, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Urdu.  Presentations will explore inclusivity, OER in K-12, Heritage Language Learners, Fair Use of copyrighted materials and other important issues.  For more details, please see the online program for the conference.

To advance social justice in education, with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the America’s Languages Portal is now ready to list and describes programs advancing equity and access in language education. These programs are intended to serve as models of how to meet the language education needs of historically underserved learners, including emergent bilingual populations (Native American, heritage, immigrant, refugee, Latinx) as well as People of Color and high-poverty rural and urban populations.
 
The Portal invites programs to fill out an application questionnaire that demonstrates how they advance equal access to language education. Upon approval by teams of distinguished educators across the country, programs will be entered on the Portal for educators to emulate, stakeholders to promulgate, and funders to support.
 
Organizations advancing social justice in education are encouraged to inform their constituents of this significant effort in support of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in this country.

The MLA provides materials and training and waives registration fees for fellows attending training
sessions at the MLA convention. On completion of the fellowship, fellows receive a $500 stipend
and a certificate presented at the convention awards ceremony.

"The Second-Language Learning Disabilities Conference  is a project on inclusive classrooms. An inclusive classroom is one where all the differences students bring are represented in the curriculum. Among these are learning differences, which add another challenge to the efforts of rethinking our curriculums, addressing the inequality between different groups, and building more inclusive classrooms. The challenge is to articulate content in a way that ensures we are facilitating learning for all our students".

This past year, bilingual educators have relied greatly on technology to support language, literacy, and content development in the partner language and English. This session prompts educators and policymakers to move beyond questions of mere access to digital tools when considering issues of digital equity for emergent bi/multilinguals. 

Speakers will consider digital teaching and learning in dual language bilingual education programs, including Indigenous language programs. They will discuss the importance of going "beyond the tech," and will critically consider how technology affords the potential for both inclusion and exclusion in dual language bilingual education programs.

Bernstein brings 25 years of Washington, DC experience to his new role as Director of Government Relations for JNCL-NCLIS. He began his Washington, DC tenure as a Legislative Fellow for Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), working on immigration, crime, intellectual property and judiciary issues. His education advocacy career commenced when he became Legislative Counsel for The Lightspan Partnership, an educational software company. Bernstein went on to lobby for the National Education Association and the Federal Communications Commission. In 2005, Bernstein founded his own government relations firm, Bernstein Strategy Group, and has worked for high-profile clients like Apple, the American Federation of School

Administrators (AFSA), and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program provides an opportunity for K–12 educators from the United States to conduct research and engage in other professional learning experiences abroad for three to six months. Fulbright DA fellows complete individual inquiry projects on a topic relevant to education in the United States and the host country, take courses at a host university, and share educational practices with colleagues.

What Fellows Do
1. Design and implement an inquiry project related to education in the United States and their host country.
2. Build global networks of researchers, practitioners, and policy makers.
3. Exchange ideas and best educational practices.
4. Develop resources and tools that can be used long after the project ends.

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term Program (Fulbright DAST) sends expert U.S. K–12 educators to participating countries to support projects in schools, teacher training colleges, government ministries, or educational nongovernmental organizations, as identified by U.S. Embassies and Fulbright Commissions.

What Fellows Do
Fulbright DAST fellows participate in short-term international projects, collaborate with colleagues abroad, and share educational policy and practice on a global scale. This program's projects cover a variety of disciplines, and program cycles may have varying numbers of projects available for application.

Deborah Parker describes how it feels to be an Asian faculty member in Italian, a field in which there are very few minorities, and how greater diversification offers a way forward. Deborah also spoke with a number of professors and graduate students in Spanish and Latin American Studies while conducting her research.

Sergio Pitol, a celebrated Mexican author, essayist and translator and winner of the most prestigious award for literature in the Spanish-speaking world, died Thursday. He was 85.

Pitol died of natural causes at his home in Xalapa, Veracruz state, said family members and Alberto Salamanca, a spokesman for the Mexican government's Department of Culture.

Born March 18, 1933, in the city of Puebla, Pitol was known for such works as "Mephisto's Waltz" and his "Trilogy of Memory," which included "The Art of Flight," ''The Journey" and "The Magician of Vienna."

He won Spanish literature's prestigious Cervantes Prize in 2005. He was awarded Mexico's National Literature Prize in 1983 and the Juan Rulfo Latin American and Caribbean Prize in 1999.
