Troy (Michigan) High School Spanish teacher honored as a top educator

Monday, December 18, 2017

Troy High School Spanish teacher Loni Vargas was recognized by the Michigan State Lottery and Michigan State University coach Tom Izzo as a top teacher in the state.

Vargas was nominated by a parent in the community and, out of more than 500 nominees, was one of 34 selected for weekly awards including a $1,500 cash prize for the educator and a $500 grant for the school. Vargas plans to use her classroom grant to take her students to view a movie in Spanish and to an authentic Spanish restaurant to experience the culture they’ve been learning about.

“This is the most amazing reward I have ever experienced thus far in my teaching career,” said Vargas. “I feel extremely honored to be considered, as there are many Troy educators in our district that are equally deserving.”

At the end of the school year, all of the weekly winners will be entered for the chance to receive a $10,000 grand prize.

Congratulations, Loni!
