AATSP Appoints Next Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese is pleased to announce the appointmentofSheri Spaine Longas the next Executive Director of the Association. Sheri will assume the new position onJuly 1, 2018after serving asExecutive Director Designate during the transition period.

Sheri Spaine Long (Ph.D. UCLA)comes to the position with extensive experience in a variety of academic and association positions. Currently, Sheri isEditor ofHispania,the scholarly journal of theAATSP. She has had the unique distinction of serving as the Editor of two flagship journals for two national professional associations:HispaniaandForeign Language Annalspublished by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Sheri’s fields of interest and specialization are broad and include Spanish language and culture, global literature, language pedagogy, and international education. She has taught Spanish language, literature, and culture courses at the K-12, undergraduate and graduate levels. Sheri’s career as a Spanish teacher began at Northwest Junior High School in Coralville, Iowa. Formerly a faculty member and department chair, she rose to the rank of Professor of Spanish at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy. More recently, she served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Languages and Culture Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  

Sheri has published numerous articles, chapters, and reviews on the integration of leadership development and language learning, the language profession, and on cultural topics such as Madrid in literature. Her recent top-selling textbooks include Nexos. Introductory Spanish, 4th ed., and Alianzas. Intermediate Spanish., 2nd ed., among others.

Sheri is also an awarding-winning educator and has received several teaching and service awards from universities and professional organizations. She received the Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in 2009. The Sigma Delta Pi National Honor Society honored her with La Orden de los Descubridores in 2012.
