Statement of Candidacy

I want to be a College/University Representative because it is a way to give back to the organization that has given so much to me. I plan to attend all AATSP national and chapter meetings during my tenure. I will work with the rest of the board to ensure that higher education continues to have a strong representation in AATSP. I will ensure that Portuguese has a presence in Board discussions. I will seek to increase the presence of literary scholars at the national conference. I will also pursue initiatives that integrate literature into other fields and approaches, such as Spanish for Specific Purposes, Service Learning, and African Diaspora Studies. I believe I can do this because I have served on the 2016 AATSP Higher Education Committee and am now attending my third national conference for the organization. I served on the 2015 Conference Travel Award Committee. I have published two articles in Hispania, won the 2015 Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award, and been an article reviewer. I have presented at three national AATSP conferences and helped plan the Alabama 2016 and 2017 conferences. I have been Vice President of the Alabama Chapter for two years. I have taught high school Spanish for five years and college Spanish and Portuguese for seven years. I look forward to working with colleagues from elementary through graduate school on initiatives to promote research and teaching for all learners.
