Mary Risner is Associate Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. She isalso founder and director of the Network of Business Language Educators (NOBLE). She is passionate about international education and believes in promoting global awareness for personal and professional success. Risner’s educational background is in Marketing, Latin American Studies, and foreign language. She also holds an Curriculum and Instruction/ Educational Technology. She has lived abroad in Europe and Latin America and has taught in K-12, post-secondary, and corporate settings. In addition to teaching, Risner has broad experience in program management and development. Her areas of interest include: Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP), the role of culture and language in international business, and online learning.

She is a former board member of the Florida Foreign Language Association and is an active member of the Florida Chapter of AATSP. She organizes and delivers professional development opportunities domestically and abroad. She has led a Fulbright Hays K-12 teacher group to Peru and Ecuador and recently implemented a week-long teacher institute in Belize and a one-day workshop in Panama. She has also organized student programs in France, Mexico, and Brazil. Risner is co-author of the text "Brazilians Working with Americans- Cultural Case Studies” and volunteers regularly to serve on conference committees and editorial review boards. She is active on a variety of social media promoting the value of language and culture skills for the workplace.

Statement of Candidacy

As Associate Director of Outreach and Business Programs at the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies, my duties include a broad range of activities working with Brazil and the Portuguese language. I have managed business exchange programs, implemented special projects, and developed Business Portuguese materials. Since 2006 I have engaged the Portuguese language instructor community through the establishment of an informational list-serve and an online language journal. I also initiated the second Celpe-Bras testing site in the U.S. at UF. I have taught Portuguese I and II, Business Portuguese, and currently coordinate and teach the "Business in Brazil” summer study abroad program.

Prior to studying and working at UF, I taught IB Spanish where I was responsible for administering the National Spanish Exam and the Sociedad Hispánica. I present regularly at AATSP and other conferences on Brazil and Portuguese language-related topics and actively promote Portuguese through AATSP Florida and our state association, FFLA.

If elected as AATSP Portuguese representative I will:

-Survey the needs of current AATSP members teaching Portuguese to better serve them

-Encourage and facilitate more collaboration between Spanish and Portuguese instructors

-Recruit Portuguese language graduate students to join AATSP

-Raise awareness of Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures by incorporating it in the K-12 curriculum

-Promote research and publications on Portuguese language and program development

-Finally, serve as liaison with other national and international Portuguese language associations to keep AATSP members informed of news and events.
