Statement of Candidacy

Hello. My name is Debbie Gill and I am a candidate for the University/College Representative on the Executive Committee.

I am Associate Professor of Spanish at The Pennsylvania State University, DuBois campus. I have a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Southern California, with an emphasis in Applied Linguistics and pedagogy. I have been an active member of AATSP since 1992, serving as a Media Reviewer for Hispania, and presenting papers and conducting workshops at local and annual meetings.

I also have been active professionally in a number of different ways. I have published, presented papers and given workshops on the use of technology for language acquisition as well as the use of authentic assessments to assess language proficiency and cultural knowledge. I have also served on numerous tasks forces focused on preparing undergraduate students to become more globalized citizens through the implementation of study abroad programs throughout the Hispanic world. Finally, I have served as the Coordinator of the National Spanish Exam for Western Pennsylvania for the past five years, I moderate a listserv for Pennsylvania K-16 Spanish teachers, and have created and maintain a web portal of materials (authentic audio, video, 10,000+ photos, and authentic activities ready for use) for K-16 educators.

If elected to the Executive Committee, I will continue to promote the learning and teaching of Spanish and Portuguese, a Mission of the AATSP. Next, I will continue to work to help students become more aware of cultural differences and build a more global perspective. And finally, I will continue to promote second language proficiency, cultural awareness, and outcomes assessments in these areas through networking and collaboration not only amongst University faculty but also a connection amongst K-16 educators.
