Statement of Candidacy

I’ve taught Spanish for 30 years, ESL in Spain, Argentina (Fulbright) and Paraguay (Fulbright), and beginning Portuguese whenever possible. I’ve been an AATSP member since graduate school and have served on various committees (Executive Council 2008-2010, Travel Stipend Committees, Proposal Reviewer). I regularly attend and present at our annual conference.

Under Emily Spinelli’s leadership AATSP has accomplished a great deal. The new graduate journal, upgrades to the website, and the webinars with Santillana are good examples. I’ve been off the Executive Council a few years, so some of my suggestions may have been discussed already.

  • To keep in touch with our constituents and improve our services, we can learn from an online survey every year of two.
  • Perhaps we can reassess our scholarships and travel grants. Many associations’ registration processes allow members to support new teachers and graduate students.
  • Can we offer additional webinars or OPI training?
  • Maybe we can mine our database to reconnect with members who haven’t renewed or haven’t attended a conference or two.
  • We want to maintain the strong connections Emily has built with other organizations (JNCLS, ACTFL, Embassies).
  • The University of Macau has 26 Portuguese faculty with whom we could set up Chinese and Portuguese exchange programs.
  • I haven’t seen or heard any mention of AATSP at the annual Spanish AP reading. It would be nice to explore more connections with College Board. We’ve increased the AP and IB credits we grant at my campus.

Muchas gracias/Muito obrigado.
