Dr. Ortega was born in Mexico City. He received his "Licenciatura en lengua y literaturas hispánicas from UNAM, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, (1977), his M.A., in Spanish language and culture, from UTSA (1978), and his Ph.D. , in Spanish and Portuguese, from The University of Texas at Austin in 1988.

After finishing his studies at UNAM, he started his teaching career in a Middle School and High school, Colegio de Bachilleres, in Mexico City, (1973-74), then he studied Spanish Culture at "Universidad Complutense de Madrid” (1974). He came to the USA to teach Spanish and Latin-American Literature at UNAM in its campus at San Antonio, (1975-1977). He taught Spanish at San Antonio College while finishing his Master’s degree at UTSA. After completing his doctoral studies at UT Austin, he started to teach at Saint Mary’s Hall, 1983 to present, then took on a second position at The University of Texas at San Antonio (1988-2003).

Dr. Ortega has been a member of the AATSP since 1983. He is a co-founder of the San Antonio de Béjar chapter (1984), he has served as president and is the current treasurer and has been since 2008. He served in the Executive Council of the AATSP as High school Representative (2009-2011). He has attended many conferences of the AATSP and presented papers in several of them. He is one of the pioneers of the AP Spanish Summer Institutes of The College Board in the Southwest, he opened the first international AP Institute in Puebla, Mexico in conjunction with The University of Texas ( 1986-1988). He has served as a Reader, Table Leader and consultant in the AP Spanish courses of the College Board since 1986, and was a member of several committees of this institution.

Dr. Ortega is a member of the Cum Laude Society of Texas, he has appeared in different editions of Who’s Who Among American Teachers, he is the recipient of the 1991 award of The College Board for his contributions to the AP Spanish program. He received a Master Teacher Award from The University of Texas (2000) and most recently the Outstanding Service Award of the AATSP (2013).

Statement of Candidacy

Good morning, buenos días, bom dia,

My name is Jose H. Ortega and I’m running as a candidate for President Elect of this association. First I want to thank the Nomination Committee for selecting me as a candidate for President Elect and the San Antonio Chapter for nominating me for this position. I’ve been a member of the AATSP, in good standing, for thirty years. I’m a co-founder of the San Antonio chapter of this association (1984), in which I served in every capacity, currently as a treasurer. I have represented this organization in many City, State, national and international conferences and events. I served as Representative for High School in the Executive Committee of the AATSP. (2009-2011)

I’m one of the pioneers of the AP Spanish Summer Institutes of the Southwest division of The College Board, where I have served as a Reader, Table Leader and Consultant since 1986. I have served in the first Vertical Teaching Committee and several others of this institution. I have dedicated my life to teaching Spanish in Middle, High school and College in Mexico, Spain and the USA.

My goal is to help to improve and open new programs in our organization, to recognize more teachers and students for their achievements and to increase our membership. I bring experience, leadership and integrity. I have served in the E.C. of this organization and I’m committed to serving our organization to the best of my abilities!
