Paragraph CV

My academic background includes a B.A. in Spanish and Linguistics and an M.A. in Linguistics, both from the University of Texas at El Paso. Furthermore, I am a doctoral candidate for an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The title of my dissertation is: Students’ Expectations and Motivations in Spanish for Heritage Speakers Programs.

I have been working at the College of Southern Nevada for the last fifteen years. At CSN, I teach Spanish and direct and teach courses in the Latin American and Latina/o Studies program. Recently, I developed a new, introductory course for Spanish for Heritage Speakers. I will start teaching that class this Fall at UNLV, where I have also taught Linguistics and Multicultural Education. Moreover, I taught Spanish for over three years at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. My teaching experience also includes teaching Spanish and ESL at community colleges in Texas and California, as well as elementary and adult schools.

As somebody who strongly believes in service, every year I am involved on several committees at CSN, some of them related to Hispanic/Latino issues. Besides the AATSP, I also belong to other professional organizations such as ACTFL and the MLA. Finally, my professional interests include: Spanish for Heritage Speakers, Applied Linguistics, Assessment, Oral/Aural Proficiency Acquisition, Study Abroad, and Mexican Culture among others.

Statement of Candidacy

Buenos días, Bom dia

Ever since I was a child, I knew that I was going to be an educator. So, it is no surprise that I have spent the last 22 years in the classroom; from elementary school to the university level and adult education. More significantly, for the last 15 years I have been a full time professor at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. My experience there includes teaching all levels of Spanish and developing and teaching both the Spanish for Heritage Speakers (SHS) program and the Latin American and Latina/o Studies A.A. degree. I have also served as Spanish Lead Faculty and participated in and chaired a variety of committees such as Curriculum, Academic Standards, Sabbatical, and Hispanic Heritage Month.

I hold a B.A. in Spanish and Linguistics and an M.A. in Linguistics, both from the University of Texas at El Paso. Furthermore, I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and I am currently working on my dissertation focusing on students’ expectations and motivations in SHS programs. Moreover, I am a frequent attendee and presenter at the AATSP Annual Conference.

As a Community College representative I would like to work on increasing the membership of my colleagues at two-year institutions, as we are clearly underrepresented. I believe this can be achieved by emphasizing more, at both the Annual Conference and in our publications, the issues that are relevant to our context: Beginning and intermediate language programs, articulation, recruitment and retention, graduation, non-transferable courses, and faculty hiring.

Muchas gracias, obrigado.
