Statement of Candidacy

My career in higher education spans 28 years, and during this time I have visited dozens of college and university campuses across the United States as an invited speaker, consultant, and program evaluator. I have a good sense of the diversity and complexity that exists within Spanish and Portuguese programs (language, undergraduate, graduate) across the country. Through these travels, I have noted common problems that tend to be solved in isolation. One of my goals as a college and university representative for AATSP is to establish ways in which people across the country can effectively communicate with each other as they examine problems related to the provision of instructional opportunities, administration, curricula, personnel, articulation, and outcomes assessment—among other issues. I have a vision of a network of professionals in higher education in Spanish and Portuguese who can exchange questions and ideas using not only traditional methods (e.g., the annual meeting of the AATSP) but also using technology now available (e.g., webinars, blogs, websites dedicated to the issues we all face). Because I have also served as language program director, director of teacher education, director of graduate studies, and department chair, I bring various experiences to the tasks at hand that will assist in setting up a communication network and in facilitating dialogue in the profession.
