Participants will examine past and present methods of teaching a world language while drawing on their own experiences to enhance the discussions and understandings. The course is open to all K-12 second language educators, including ESL educators, college educators with an interest in K-12 second language methodologies, and pre-service education majors.

Participants will examine past and present methods of teaching a world language while drawing on their own experiences to enhance the discussions and understandings. The course is open to all K-12 second language educators, including ESL educators, college educators with an interest in K-12 second language methodologies, and pre-service education majors.

Specific course topics include:

  • Current issues and topics in second language teaching and learning
  • Characteristics of proficiency in a world language
  • World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages
  • Role of context in teaching for communication
  • Integration of culture and language
  • Application of Concordia Language Villages instructional strategies to the world language classroom
  • Formative and summative assessments

This 10-day course may be taken for graduate credit (four graduate credits) or for continuing education units (80 hours). It may be taken as a stand-alone course or as a part of the Master of Education in World Language Instruction program.
