Seminar East this year will be held jointly with the Association of Departments of English.

Hosts: College of Humanities and the Arts and the Department of World Languages and Literatures, San José State Univ. and College of Arts and Science and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Santa Clara Univ.


Each seminar features a preseminar workshop for new chairs, where those about to start or just completing their first year as department chairs can gather practical advice and have questions answered by seasoned administrators about all aspects of chairing. Seminars also feature a preseminar workshop on strategic planning. The workshop will be divided in two parts.

The first part will discuss program reviews, examining materials, standards, and practices from the viewpoint of both potential department reviewers and chairs of departments preparing for review.

The second part will address faculty hiring strategies, focusing on securing faculty lines and successfully hiring and retaining faculty members. Seminar West will offer a workshop on teaching language through literature. The workshop will focus on using literature for the development of the upper register in oral and written second-language development, placing a special emphasis on the assessment of literary text comprehension.
