A Portuguese-American Experience for the Classroom?

44th Annual Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)

March 21-24, 2013

Boston, Massachusetts

Host Institution: Tufts University

This panel addresses the identity of the Portuguese American experience from an interdisciplinary perspective. Does the Portuguese American experience, from literary typifications of the pioneer to re-signifying contemporary ethnicity in American culture, challenge or enhance the canon of high school and college curricula? What place does Portuguese American Literature have in the field of Ethnic American Literature? Please send inquiries or 300-500 word abstract and short bio in body of email to Sílvia Oliveira,

"A Portuguese-American Experience for the Classroom?” calls on scholars in this growing field to reflect on the identity of the Portuguese-American experience and its inclusion or absence from the canon of high school and college curricula. This panel encourages participants to connect the ample sociological research produced over the last 10 years about the experience of Portuguese-Americans in US society with the burgeoning literary research on Portuguese-American authors and their works, and how it relates to pedagogy or cultural experience. This call for papers welcomes multidisciplinary perspectives on the importance and role of Portuguese-American Studies in American educational curricula.

Possible questions addressed in this panel are: How can the Portuguese-American experience enhance the American educational curricula? How inclusive are the curricula in New England and California where Portuguese-American heritage population is most prominent? Are there experimental pedagogies being developed and tested? What is Ethnic-American Literature and Studies and how do Portuguese-American authors challenge or enhance this field of study?

This panel aims to reflect on the pedagogy of the Portuguese-American experience, the development of Portuguese-American Studies at American institutions of higher education, the future presence of Portuguese-American authors in the American literary scene, and an increased interest in Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures throughout the United States at all curriculum levels.
