OVERVIEW

Course Name and CRN: Reading to Learn: Young Adult Fiction in the Foreign Language Classroom; SPAN 68095

Location(s): online course with 2 weeks in Salamanca, Spain

Course Description: This eight week hybrid course is a unique experiential learning opportunity for current junior and senior high school Spanish teachers. Participants will begin the course online (June 11th-June 21st) before flying to Salamanca, Spain for two weeks (June 22nd-July 7th) to be immersed linguistically and culturally. In Salamanca, time will be divided between the 100th annual American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese conference (AATSP - June 25th-28th), intensive Spanish review, and the pedagogy of reading-to-learn through young adult fiction. The program includes visits to some of Salamanca's many historical monuments (in fact, this year the city is celebrating the 800th anniversary of the University of Salamanca). After returning home, participants will continue the course online (July 8th-August 4th). Activities will include reading and writing about a variety of stories and short novels for young adults, as well as developing lesson plans for high school students.
