The 2018 Symposium on Second Language Writing, will take place August 2-4, 2018 at the Harbour Centre campus of Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference is jointly hosted by Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia.

This year’s theme is “Multilingualism and Second Language Writing.” In recent years, what have been dubbed “multi/pluri” (Kubota, 2016) approaches to language and writing have proliferated in applied linguistics, composition, second language writing, and other relevant fields concerned with language and literacy. Terms such as multilingual, plurlingual, translingual, translanguaging, and polylanguaging, among others, have been used to describe learners, writers, language practices, writing processes, texts, and social contexts. While second language writing as a field has always focused on writers who use multiple languages, in recent years the field has begun to contend with perspectives that bring multilingualism to the foreground in new ways. This is not unique to L2 English writing, but also should lead us to consider the importance, influence, and use of languages other than English in L2 writing. The multicultural, multilingual setting of Vancouver, in the officially bilingual country of Canada, offers a rich opportunity for scholars and teachers of second language writing to explore these issues.
