GOLDEN: Online Professional Learning for Teachers of Spanish

  • Application deadline for summer or fall admission to GOLDEN MA program: March 1
  • Open registration for second semester GOLDEN courses: November 8

The Global Online Language Distance Education Network (GOLDEN) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, recognized by US News and World Report as a model online graduate education program, offers courses in foreign language pedagogy, a customizable M.A. in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education with a Specialization in World Language Education, and a Certificate in World Language Education. GOLDEN courses are designed specifically for current and aspiring Spanish classroom teachers with accommodations made for those not currently teaching in a language classroom. The goal of GOLDEN courses is two-fold: to develop classroom teachers’ knowledge in content areas (target language culture and interculturality, literature, and language) and to expand knowledge of research informed practices for improving student language learning and proficiency. The courses are completely online, taught in the target language, and oriented toward theory into practice.

Along with building a strong community of fellow Spanish teachers, GOLDEN courses offer the benefit of learning by doing. All courses allow participants first to become familiar with new tasks, activities, technologies, and applications as a student and then to reflect on those experiences as a teacher. Many times, course participants design lessons and tasks to try out with their own students, followed by a discussion of the experience with colleagues. The courses are delivered via the Canvas course management system with all information presented in the target language, including discussions and products created, thereby giving participants the opportunity to increase their language content knowledge. Readings are in both Spanish and English, as much of the language pedagogy research is written in English. A variety of authentic Spanish texts provide meaningful contexts for acquiring and expanding language and culture/intercultural knowledge and skills. GOLDEN offers flexibility to either complete a formal MA/Certificate program or to simply take stand-alone courses, as desired.

Past students have found GOLDEN courses to be extremely beneficial and have incorporated many of the lessons learned into their own classrooms.

·        “One thing that I like most about taking classes through GOLDEN is how applicable they are to my teaching. There were so many products that we make that I can ask my students to do with a minimal amount of tweaking. Everything that we make, I am able to use in my classroom.”

·        “I will never be the same teacher again. I would love to redo a lesson now for a supervisor that had observed me. I would love to hear her feedback now, because I would approach my lesson planning so very differently.”

The requirements for admission to the MA program are:

·        Application and admission to the UNL Graduate College and to the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education

·        GPA of 2.5 or above

·        Substantial content knowledge in Spanish. Content knowledge may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including current or prospective language educator, degree in the language, university language faculty and/or graduate student, etc.

GOLDEN courses currently offered in Spanish in rotation are:
