Community College Representative

Susanna Williams

Macomb County Community College;
Warren, MI

Summary of CV

My career started after earning at the University of Torino, Italy a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Spanish with a thesis on Second Language Acquisition (glotodidáctica). Since my arrival in the United States, I have been teaching in several Community Colleges in Michigan where I obtained a full time position at Macomb CC (Warren) as Spanish & Italian Professor. Since then, I have been active both academically and in the College Governance working with several Committees. Currently, I chair the Study Abroad Group (a subcommittee of the Multicultural Initiative Committee) that regulates the College Study Abroad initiatives. In fact, in the past 10 years, I have initiated and organized Study Abroad Programs at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico and at the University of Granada, Spain. I am also active with the College Student Organization where I advise the Spanish, Italian and Student Abroad Clubs, and promote Service Learning activities. On the Academic side, I have created an International Studies program and developed the curriculum of Introduction to Latin America. After achieving two Online Instruction Certifications (Michigan Virtual University and Instituto Cervantes), I have built and taught Spanish hybrid programs and created online support for all on ground courses. I chair the Foreign Language Department and share its governance in all its aspects, including creating Chinese and Arabic language programs. My dedication to students has been recognized with two NISOD Teaching Excellence Awards, which to me represent a constant encouragement to promote language acquisition at my best.

Statement of Candidacy

I am Susanna Williams and I am happy to be a candidate for Community College Representative.

In the last 20 years, I taught world languages in Community Colleges. Currently, I chair the Foreign Language Department to which I added Chinese and Arabic programs. I created the International Studies discipline and written the curriculum of Introduction to Latin America. I developed Spanish hybrid programs and provided online support to my on ground courses. I chair the Study Abroad Committee since I initiated two Study Abroad Programs. I advise three College Student Clubs, and promote Service Learning activities. My dedication to students has been recognized with two NISOD Teaching Excellence Awards. In fact, I have a deep commitment to Community College students. We all know our students are eager to learn, but they have to work hard for their education. Most of them are first generation going to college and hold at least one job. Often they are single parents facing extreme financial hardships. Therefore, I strongly believe our mission as Community College teachers goes beyond promoting language acquisition. In fact, we can represent the only way for our students to better their lives and to achieve a more rounded education.

If elected, besides committing to complete the projects initiated by my predecessor, I will put my efforts into facilitating a constructive discussion in order to address our common needs and to strengthen our language programs as well as our position in the association.

Thank you!
