University of Houston Downtown; Houston, TX
Summary of CV
I have been
an active member in the Spanish education profession for thirty-five years. In
the course of my career, I have taught Spanish at the high school, community
college, college, and university levels. Following my first years as a language
teacher, I attended the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where
I completed a Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics with a certificate in Second
Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE). I chose that particular
program because many of the leading scholars in the fields encompassed in SLATE
were at UIUC at the time and I wanted to study under their guidance.
completing my Ph.D. I have taught students of Spanish and Spanish Second
Language Education at universities from Illinois to Wyoming to Texas, where I
have offered courses in Spanish Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and
the Teaching of Spanish. These positions have allowed opportunities to work
with neophyte candidates preparing to join our profession as well as already
experienced and accomplished Spanish teachers in the field. In addition to
working with teachers of Spanish, I have also worked with accomplished
professionals and teaching candidates in the area of Bilingual Education in and
around the greater Houston area.
In the area
of scholarship, I have made numerous professional presentations about a wide
array of topics related to the teaching and learning of Spanish as a second
language. Furthermore, I have co-authored two books about these topics, one
with Terry Lynn Ballman and Judith Liskin-Gasparro in 2001 in the AATSP
Professional Series and the second with Terry Lynn Ballman in 2014 in the
McGraw-Hill Second Language Acquisition Professional Series.
In sum, I believe all these second language oriented experiences have prepared me to serve as University Representative to the Board of AATSP and I would welcome the opportunity to bring them to the table if elected. Thank you!Read Paul Mandell's Full CV (PDF)Statement of Candidacy
My name is
Paul Mandell and it is my pleasure to be a candidate for University
Representative to the Board of AATSP. As of the first of September, I will be
Associate Professor of Spanish Applied Linguistics and Second Language
Acquisition at the University of Houston Downtown.
I would like
to serve on the Board of the AATSP because as a Spanish professor and
professional, I have benefited academically and professionally from the
wonderful teachers at the secondary and college levels who encouraged me to
learn Spanish, study the Latino cultures around the globe and, to participate
as both student and professor in study abroad opportunities in Costa Rica,
Mexico, Honduras, and Ecuador. Serving on the Board will provide an opportunity
for me to give back to this organization that has played such an important role
in all of our careers as teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
I began my
professional career as a high school and community college Spanish instructor,
experiences that led me to pursue graduate studies in Spanish Linguistics,
Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education at the University of Illinois
in Urbana-Champaign. Currently, as the Coordinator of the Beginning Spanish
Program at my university, I regularly offer courses in the Fundamentals of Contemporary
Language Teaching, working with future Spanish teachers to introduce them to
the hows and whys of contemporary language learning and teaching.
joined AATSP twenty years ago, as a neophyte graduate student when I learned
the important role that AATSP serves in the profession of the teaching of
Spanish and Portuguese in the United States. My involvement with our
association has allowed me to regularly present talks, papers, and workshops at
our annual conferences, to meet and work with a growing body of friends and
colleagues around the country, and to coauthor a volume about communicative
language teaching in the AATSP Professional Series with Judith Liskin-Gasparro
and Terry Lynn Ballman in 2001.
In short, AATSP has played a vital role in shaping my professional career and, if elected to serve on the Board, I will relish the opportunity to give back to this organization and to be a voice for all of our members as a University Representative on the AATSP Board. Thank you for your consideration!
