Statement of Candidacy
I'm Irma Bjerre. I have been teaching Spanish at University and Community College levels for 20 years, mostly at Clackamas Community College in Oregon. I served for 4 years as Department Chair bringing programs like Chinese and working on language articulations with high schools.
As a native of Columbia, I want to share with students a love of cultural learning.
I worked closely with a statewide consortium of community colleges to promote study abroad. I have led four groups of students to International House Barcelona. In fact, I just returned from taking a group of enthusiastic students there. For many years, I have coordinated International Week Celebration, a four day celebration of language and culture with presentations from faculty, students, professional performers and members of the community.
I have extensive experience working on Boards of Directors. Since I started working at Clackamas, I became a member of OATSP and COFLT (the Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching). I represented at OATSP in the COFLT Board. I was elected Vice-President and then President of COFLT. I coordinated two State Conferences and one Bi-State Conference with WAFLT. I am very capable of organizing events and conferences and working together with groups to promote the teaching of the Spanish language and culture.
If elected, I will diligently work on promoting community college participation in your conferences and getting presentations that are of special interest to community college teachers. My passion is to provide opportunities for students to study Spanish abroad in Spain and Latin America.
