Statement of Candidacy

Hi.  My name is Bill VanPatten. And I’m a candidate for President-elect of AATSP. I would like to tell you just a few things in this brief presentation. The first is that I love the AATSP. I have served on the Executive Board as college/university rep as well as on various ad hoc committees. I have also served on the editorial board of Hispania for a number of years now. I regularly present at the annual conference, both papers and workshops. And I promote the AATSP wherever I go. Another thing I would like for you to know is how passionate I am about teaching and learning. My entire career has been devoted to not only enhancing my own knowledge and skills, but in trying to help instructors in their attempts to develop communicatively oriented and proficiency-based curricula. One of my main goals has been to help instructors and instructors-in-training see how curricular decisions can be informed by what we know about how languages and communicative ability are learned.  The last thing I would like to say here is that I will work hard to help the AATSP realize its mission and aims. I will work hard to help AATSP wrap up its first centennial and set goals for the next. It will be an honor to work with and for all of you.
