2016 Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award

The AATSP Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award is given annually to an article published in Hispania. The focus of the award alternates on an annual basis. The focus for all odd-numbered years is literature, film, and culture while the focus for even-numbered years is linguistics and language science/pedagogy. Hispania Associate Editors nominate and select the winner from all the eligible published articles. 


The recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award is Justin White for his article "The Effect of Input-based Instruction Type on the Acquisition of Spanish Accusative Clitics” published in the June 2015 issue of Hispania [98.2: 264-284].

The members of the Selection Committee had the following comments about this article:

The author conducted a series of tests (pre-tests, treatment, and several post-tests at different time intervals) to measure both interpretation and production of Spanish Accusative clitics, and compared the effects of the Structured Input with the effects of other input–based instructional treatments. His conclusion is that Structured Input is ‘not only effective when compared with production-oriented instructional techniques, but is also effective when compared with other input-based treatments.’ The pedagogical implications of his findings are obvious and far-reaching, and the study is conducted in a rigorous manner. The language is clear and elegant, and the argumentation regarding the superiority of one instructional technique over others is convincing.
