Summary of CV

Ronald P. Leow is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of Spanish Language Instruction in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Georgetown University for two and a half decades. His areas of expertise include language curriculum development, teacher education, SLA, psycholinguistics, cognitive processes in language learning, research methodology, and CALL. Professor Leow has published extensively in prestigious journals that include Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Language Learning, Applied Psycholinguistics, Modern Language Journal, Hispania, and Second Language Research. He has co-edited several books and his most recent one titled "A psycholinguistic approach to technology and language learning” (de Gruyter Mouton) appears in 2015 together with his single-authored book titled "Explicit learning in the L2 Classroom: A student-centered approach” (Routledge). Prof. Leow is also the recipient of two technology grants, the first seeking to establish a partial hybrid curriculum for the Spanish program and the second empirically evaluating with colleagues the effectiveness, across languages, of the medium (Teletandem) on students’ listening and speaking abilities. One of his current research foci addresses the unstoppable proliferation of hybrid/blended courses for L2 learning and the need for theoretically driven and empirically supported research that guides an adequate migration of content from the classroom, examining both learning outcomes and processes. Prof. Leow has also been invited to give teacher education workshops both nationally and internationally.

Statement of Candidacy

I have been a member of AATSP for over two and a half decades and can still remember the reason why I joined this wonderful organization: My mentor’s relatively strong insistence that I do so and present my empirical study (that later became my dissertation) at the AATSP conference in Miami Beach (at the Fontainebleu Resort). This memory is etched in my brain (unlike many others) because I felt like home, academically speaking, of course. Since 1991, I have always made a concerted effort to organize at least one or two research sessions at AATSP conferences that always include presentations from our graduate students. My "relatively strong insistence” and rationale for becoming members of AATSP and presenting at this conference include the needed visibility and participation in the largest Spanish and Portuguese organization for marketability purposes and networking. Indeed, I firmly believe that the strength of AATSP membership and global recognition lie in our graduate students and I was honored recently to form part of AATSP’s Higher Education Task Force to provide suggestions for maximizing our graduate students’ participation in AATSP. As College/University Representative, I would make it a priority to promote more graduate student participation by networking with other graduate programs to follow a similar format that I use, namely, encouraging faculty to submit session proposals featuring their graduate students’ research projects. I would also seek to provide professional support at the conferences that includes, for example, discussions on publishing, writing up manuscripts, mentorship, and interviewing tips.
