Summary of CV

I have been a language educator for 40 years, with professional experience in all levels: elementary, middle school, high school, community college, university, and adult programs, in both public and private institutions, in Iowa, Hawaii, Texas, and Monterrey, Mexico. I have served the profession through collaborative and leadership roles, including as a member of the AP Spanish Test Development Committees, as president of TexTESOL, and have served on the AATSP executive council as the Secondary Representative, as well as serving on several AATSP committees, including conference programs, scholarships, and the SHH Director search committee, as well as working as World Language Department Chair at two campuses. I have presented sessions and workshops at over 40 conferences, institutes, and trainings.  I have been the recipient of the AATSP Outstanding Secondary Teaching Award, the Mario Fierro Award, the Texas Foreign Language Teacher of the Year, Seguin ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year, finalist for Texas AP Outstanding Teacher of the Year, Commended Teacher of the Humanities, and various innovative teaching awards.

AATSP membership is an important part of my life. Many of my students have been recognized and rewarded through participation in the Spanish Honor Society through scholarships, travel awards, and the chapter of the year award, through the National Spanish Exam as medalists and scholarship recipients, and as winners in the Poster Contest.

Thank you for your consideration!

Statement of Candidacy

The mission of the AATSP stresses collaboration and understanding, and that is my mission as well.

We must inform and be informed of matters that impact our field, ourselves, and our students. We must maintain the quality of our outstanding organization. As we approach 100 years of promoting the learning of Spanish and Portuguese we must look to the future, and move forward with our goals.

My goals while on the executive council include:

  • Help members understand and use all the resources AATSP offers
  • Get members more involved, encourage more involvement at conferences by high school teachers, who are the largest percentage of our membership, and build membership and involvement at the elementary and middle school levels
  • Recognize contributions and connections members make that increase membership, and contributions to regional chapters
  • Encourage state and regional AATSP chapters to be more active, to provide teachers in their areas with more ways to network locally, to reward students and teachers, and to share their best ideas and sessions at our annual conference
  • Maintain the professional connections with other organizations and to strengthen ties with the College Board/AP/IB
  • Strengthen open communication, connections to workplace and real world applications, and build a global perspective with collaboration at all levels
  • Help members so that their students of Spanish and Portuguese make connections to STEM and the arts, and gain cultural insights so that they may effectively apply their language skills in their daily lives

Gracias! Obrigada!
