Martha Vásquez

Secondary (9-12) Representative

Martha Vásquez

William Howard Taft High School; San Antonio, TX

Paragraph CV

I have been an educator for 18 years. I hold a BA in Spanish, a BA in Theology, and a MA in Spanish Language with a concentration in Hispanic Culture. I have exercised my profession by working for San Antonio ISD and for the outstanding Northside Independent School District. During this period of time I have taught all levels of the Spanish Curriculum. I have been the Languages Other Than English Department Chair, shared my knowledge and expertise in various committees and presentations, and served as the Coordinator of the College Preparatory Program known as AVID. I have also effectively taught the AP Spanish Language and Culture and the AP Spanish Literature and Culture courses. Throughout my years of service, I have been able to spice my academic experience by teaching dual credit courses, overseeing a local tutoring program, and being a mentor for all first year teachers at my campus. I have a strong academic background in Spanish language, literature and cultures, and I am committed to and passionate about my career. Being a member, local president and collaborator of AATSP, becoming a College Board AP Spanish Language and Literature Exam Reader, and working as a dedicated sponsor of the "Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica” have also enriched me both, personally and professionally. I look forward to continue working with everyone to offer both, our students and educators, academic and culturally enriching experiences.

Statement of Candidacy

I am Martha Vasquez, candidate for Secondary (9-12) representative to the AATSP Executive Council. I have gladly accepted this candidacy because education and service have always been at the heart of my professional career.

I have effectively served as International Languages Coordinator at 2 different campuses. I am very optimistic, hardworking and goal oriented. I have been very successful at bringing out the best in our students and teachers. I have worked closely with faculty and students to grow our Spanish and French Programs to make an impact and change the simple "minimum requirement” mind set to one that seeks to advance students to at least a third year of the target language.

Under my leadership, our Chapter has remained committed to serving our community of students and educators by, among other things:

  • Presenting at the AATSP annual conference
  • Organizing volunteers for the 2013 AATSP annual conference in San Antonio, TX
  • Sponsoring teachers to attend the AATSP annual summer conference
  • Expanding our traditional annual poetry contest to include speaking and poster contests
  • Promoting national awards for members and their respective organizations
  • Marketing San Antonio-area cultural events
  • Creating partnership with local entities.

If selected to be the new 9-12 High School Representative, I will maintain my spirit of collaboration, promote the activities I have found successful in my own chapter, and especially, I would emphasize the importance of including educators from all levels in our chapter activities. I will continue being myself, safeguarding the values and mission of AATSP and the quality of our programs, which ultimately seek to promote the learning and appreciation of our language and cultures. Finally, if given the privilege to be your new High School Representative, I will serve AATSP with a positive, up building, and Dynamic Spirit!

Thank You for your consideration!
