College / University Representative
Retired, Berkeley, CA
Although I am retired as a Senior Lecturer in
the Dept. of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of California at
Berkeley, currently I am still active in the summer abroad program of my department in Madrid, which I created eight years ago. It started with one course and for this
coming summer it incudes the two second year courses and two upper division
ones. In my last years in the department
I taught introduction to literature and advanced composition courses. My interest in writing led to writing a text,
Modelos, with two colleagues, which is appropriate for classes on writing at
the upper division level. The second
edition of our text was published two years ago. Additionally many of my presentations at
conferences have dealt with the teaching of writing. Additionally, I have been active in our foreign
language association in the Bay Are (FLANC) that took over the publication of
Connections from SWCOLT. This coming
November the eighth volume will be published.
The journal draws, principally, on the expertise and experience of the
college and high school teachers. As I
am an ACTFL trained tester, I still do the evaluations for the department at
the University that deal with students for grants and scholarships as well as
for programs in Spanish speaking countries.
Lastly, for our Northern California Chapter of AATSP I am the treasurer;
our focus has been on engaging our colleagues in the areas that are distant
from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Statement of Candidacy
A little while back I was asked
to look into the inactive status of our local chapter of AATSP. As there was no information about the
previous officers, I called upon enough of the local members of AATSP to
reactivate the chapter, elect a slate of officers and consider the activities that
would be beneficial to the chapter members.
In that time there has been a
general meeting of the members, a social meeting at the invitation of the
president, a workshop for high school teachers at Berkeley City College, a
future workshop for teachers at Cal State Stanislaus. Additionally one of our members is the chair
for the poster contest of our area.
At the same time we have contacts
with the universities and community colleges in our area as potential sites for
future workshops and meetings for our members, we are also in touch with local
organizations that work with high school teachers to collaborate in workshops and
conferences for world language teachers in our area. Additionally through FLANC (Foreign Language
Association of Northern California), we have contacts
with student teacher programs to bring student teachers into our professional
At the conferences of AATSP there
is a meeting of the chapters that allows for an exchange of information which
is very useful. It would also be useful
to know which activities are deemed successful and which have not worked quite
