My name is Elaine Davis and I am a candidate for the office of President Elect for the 2013 AATSP election. My entire teaching career has been working as a teacher in the Madison Public School System, Madison, New Jersey.
My education includes a BA from Juniata College with junior year abroad in Valencia. A masters degree from Middlebury College which included a year of study in Madrid, Spain and a second MA from New York University where I enrolled in the three year summer program, which included two summers in Madrid. Subsequently I have taken courses in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Guadalajara, Mexico, Havana, Cuba and San José, Costa Rica.
In my service to the AATSP, I served as secretary to the New Jersey chapter for 8 years. I began the Madison High School chapter of the SHH. Later on I became the Region I representative to the SHH. From 2004-2006 I served on the Executive Council of the AATSP as a high school representative.
Outside of my educational career I have been a crisis response team member for Domestic Violence working with the Spanish-speaking victims in Morris County, New Jersey. Statement of Candidacy
I would like to thank Laura, Emily and the Executive Council for the honor of being nominated for the position of President Elect of the AATSP. It is a great compliment to be considered for this position.
My college professor encouraged me to join the AATSP, which I did immediately when beginning my first year as a Spanish Teacher. Over the course of my 40 years as an AATSP member, I have been
- The Secretary of the New Jersey Chapter
- Began the Mario Vargas Llosa Chapter of the SHH at Madison High School
- Served as regional Director of the SHH
- Served on the Executive Council of the AATSP
- Attended numerous AATSP Conventions both here at home and abroad
Regarding the future, I feel it is important for all of us to be familiar with the Danielson Framework for Teaching and Common Core Standards. I hope that the membership takes advantage of the August Webinar on Common Core Text Complexity as announced in the July 31 AATSP Announcements.
In the 2013-2014 school year twenty more states will join the Common Core State Standards Initiative. As part of this initiative we will be assessed on our ability to build a pathway to college and career readiness. The ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and the Common Core State Standards are linked via the three modes of communication: interpretive, presentational and interpersonal and the three proficiency levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. I encourage the members to participate in the professional development webinars offered by Santillana which focus on the implementation of the core standards and attend the session offered here at the conference. Additionally, I would like to see the AATSP create a list of possible assessments and / or guidelines aligned to the core. A collaborative effort to develop Student Growth Objectives with meaningful and achievable outcomes will benefit us all.
As a final note - As of today, I have attended 23 AATSP conferences. I hope that is an indication of the love and passion for the AATSP. Thank you for your attention.
